HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1: Post University 3, Dominican (N.Y.) 9
Early on, it was Post taking the lead as graduate shortstop
Evan Cornwell got an RBI base knock in the second, as part of a two-run inning following an RBI single from graduate infielder
Hunter Keller. But freshman right-hander
Hector Cuevas ended up lasting only 3 2/3 innings for the Eagles on the mound, allowing four runs on two hits with five walks and three strikeouts, getting handed his second loss of the season.
The Chargers would take the lead with one swing of the bat against Cuevas in the fourth as junior infielder Chad Falcon hit a three-run home run, kickstarting a stretch of seven unanswered runs by Dominican (N.Y.) over the course of the next three innings. Falcon closed game one going 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored, adding on a run in the sixth, which made it an 8-3 game.
Freshman infielder
Andrew Rhymestine drove in the only other run for Post in the sixth off of senior right-hander John Stoliker, who picked up his second win of the season on the mound. Stoliker lasted six innings, allowing three runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts before making way for junior right-hander Josh Harrison, who allowed five walks into the ninth, but Post was unable to scratch across any more runs in the 9-3 loss.
Junior outfielder Jaden Maia was the only other multi-hit player for either team besides Keller, with two hits for Post and Falcon with three, as he was 3-for-5, falling a home run short of the cycle, with an RBI and two runs scored.
Game 2: Post University 5, Dominican (N.Y.) 1 (7 Innings)
Hartman would be the only Eagle with multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-4 with an RBI triple and RBI single while also scoring a run. The graduate student has now recorded eight multi-RBI games this season, which leads the team so far, as he helped drive in the third run of the game in the third inning as well as an insurance run in the fifth inning.
Post scored the first four runs of the affair as freshman infielder
Andrew Rhymestine hit his first collegiate home run in the second inning off of senior right-hander Samuel Herrera, which gave them an early 1-0 lead. A three-run third inning would be highlighted by Hartman's RBI triple, which allowed senior catcher
Manny Contreras to drive him in with a sacrifice fly, as well as an RBI base knock from junior outfielder
Joey Cohen, as the visitors were off to the races with a 4-0 edge.
Herrera would end up getting chased after 4 2/3 innings, allowing all five runs on five hits with three walks, two strikeouts, and a wild pitch, getting handed his second loss of the season. In relief, freshman right-hander Yanka Pineda Santana threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing no runs on no hits with four strikeouts and a walk. As for Post's pitching, freshman right-hander
Jacob Schrage moved to 3-0 on the mound this year, allowing just one run on an infield single, along with eight hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
The bullpen for the Eagles was made up by freshman right-handers
JJ Roberts and
Andrew Hardin, who combined to throw the final 2 1/3 innings and allowed no runs on five hits. With two outs in the seventh, Dominican (N.Y.) would load the bases up on three consecutive hits against Hardin, but the freshman would come back to get senior outfielder Davin Keddell-Tuckey to fly out and end the game with the Eagles coming out on top, 5-1. For Hardin, it was the seventh consecutive appearance in which he has not allowed a run this year out of nine total appearances.
