Men's Ice Hockey Falters Late, Drops Regular-Season Finale to Saint Anselm on the Road

MANCHESTER, N.H. –  Senior forward Matteo Peca scored his second goal of the year for Post University Men's Ice Hockey, but the Eagles would see their late one-goal lead slip away as two late third period goals by Saint Anselm College gave them their revenge from Friday's loss in Saturday's regular-season finale, 2-1, on their home ice.

THE BASICS

Post University 1, Saint Anselm College 2

Post University (8-18-1, 7-12-1 NE10)

Saint Anselm College (12-13-4, 11-7-2 NE10)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Through the first two periods of play, Peca's first period goal would stand alone as the only score for either side with the help of sophomore defenseman Matthew Pacheco and sophomore forward Scotty Swain. The offensive assist duo of Pacheco and Swain had two assists on Friday, making it a three-point weekend for them with three assists apiece, while senior goalie Benjamin Cunneen continued to dazzle in net, being faced with only 10 shots and making all 10 saves.

However, in the third, penalties would come into play for the Eagles, as entering the final 20 minutes they had committed just one up to that point, before committing three in the final period alone. That would come back to bite them late as senior forward John Myers netted the game-tying goal against Cunneen with under five minutes to go in regulation on the fourth and final power play of the day that the Hawks had.

Only 32 seconds later, senior forward Garrett Alberti struck with the go-ahead goal, which would end up propelling Saint Anselm to the come-from-behind victory, 2-1. Post would have one last chance with a 6-on-4 advantage due to a late penalty by the Hawks, but were unable to cash in against senior goalie Tucker Hanson, who earned his first win of the season in net with 24 saves. Cunneen, who took the loss, stopped 25 shots between the pipes, falling to 8-13-1 this year.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Tucker Hanson picked up his first win of the season in net for Saint Anselm College, finishing with 24 saves on 25 attempts taken by Post University
  • After needing to make just 10 saves through the first two periods, Benjamin Cunneen closed with 25 saves on 27 shots from Saint Anselm College, making 15 saves in the third period
  • Scotty Swain and Matthew Pacheco each had an assist for Post University, giving them a total of three assists for the entire weekend
  • Post University finishes the regular-season series against Saint Anselm College with a 1-3-0 record after winning yesterday, 5-2, at home
