Big Third Quarter Leads Women's Basketball Past Bridgeport for Fifth Conference Win of the Season

WATERBURY, Conn. – Post University Women's Basketball continues to own the third quarter against their opponents in the Drubner Center as the Eagles picked up their fifth conference win of the season, this time against the University of Bridgeport on Wednesday night behind a 19-6 third-quarter showing. Leading by eight at halftime, the 13-point edge in the third frame helped the Eagles cruise past the Purple Knights, 60-44, avenging their earlier season loss to them on the road.

THE BASIC

Post University 60, University of Bridgeport 44

Post University (7-9, 5-6 CACC)

University of Bridgeport (8-8, 6-6 CACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED
From the tip-off, it would be all Post as they would open up the game on an 11-2 run led by six points from junior forward Alyssa Rossignol, with the lone basket for Bridgeport coming from sophomore center Zahkiyyah Frazier. Frazier would start a responding 7-0 run for the Purple Knights with her layup, helping her team get back within two, but Bridgeport would only tie the game three times and never take the lead in the first half.

One of those three ties came when junior forward Isabella Edwards scored with 59 seconds left, but five straight points from sophomore forward Tiara Tyson to end the first gave Post a two-point lead, 19-17, heading into the second. The sophomore's five points came via a three-point play, then hitting 2-of-3 free throws after being fouled with 0.3 seconds on the clock on her heave from beyond the arc.

The largest lead of the half for the Eagles would coincide with the end of the second quarter as graduate forward Megan Landsiedel connected on a three as time expired, giving Post an eight-point edge at halftime, 35-27. Tyson would close with a team-high 11 points after her 19-point performance last game, scoring seven of those points from the free-throw line, where she was 7-for-10. Rossignol's six-point start to the affair saw her head into half at eight points on 3-for-4 shooting, as the Eagles were 10-for-27 (37%) overall.

Frazier's four-point first led to her leading the Purple Knights with 10 points on 5-for-9 shooting, accounting for nearly half the Bridgeport field goals made, as they closed at 12-for-27 (44.4%) from the field. The free-throw battle was the biggest discrepancy for either side as Post took 16 shots from the charity stripe, going 12-for-16 (75%), while Bridgeport took only four, connecting on three.

In another dominant third-quarter effort, the Eagles outscored Bridgeport, 19-6, turning an eight-point lead into a 21-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, 54-33. The effort was spearheaded by a 2-for-9 (22.2%) showing from the floor for the Purple Knights, including making only one of their two free throws, while Post was 7-for-12 (58.3%) overall, connecting on two of their four threes. Although a low-scoring fourth saw the Eagles score just six points, Bridgeport's shooting continued to struggle, going 5-for-19 (26.3%), resulting in the 16-point victory for the Eagles, 60-44.

Tyson would end up finishing with the team-lead in points with 13 points on 3-for-9 shooting and go 7-for-10 from the free-throw line, while Frazier closed with a game-high 13 points for Bridgeport, finishing 6-for-10 with 11 rebounds to close with a double-double in the loss. Rossignol was the only other double-digit scorer for either team, scoring 12 points on 50% shooting (5-for-10), as both teams ended up finishing under 40% shooting, with Post holding a slight edge at 39.6% (19-for-48) over Bridgeport's 34.5% showing (19-for-55). The Purple Knights also finished the game controlling the battle on the boards by a hefty 45-25 margin.
