WATERBURY, Conn. – Sophomore forward
Tiara Tyson had herself an afternoon, leading Post University Women's Basketball with a season-high 19 points on 9-for-14 shooting, while the Eagle defense forced a season-high 38 turnovers in the Drubner Center on Saturday afternoon, getting back in the win column with a 67-56 win.
THE BASIC
Post University 67, Chestnut Hill College 56
Post University (6-9, 4-6 CACC)
Chestnut Hill College (10-9, 7-4 CACC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
In one of their best defensive halves of the season, Post's defense forced 20 turnovers against Chestnut Hill through the first two quarters, leading to 14 of the 29 points the Eagles scored. Tyson led the way with nine points on 4-for-7 shooting as she was one of four players to score for Post in the first half. In their matchup earlier this season, the Eagles forced only 18 turnovers throughout the whole game against the Griffins.
Both junior
Alyssa Rossignol and sophomore guard
Jasmine Day-Cox each recorded eight points as the Post offense shot 36.4% from the field (12-for-33), leading only four at the break, 29-25. Senior guard Sara Tamoun helped the Griffins to a 34.4% shooting half (11-for-32) with eight points, but Chestnut Hill fell behind right away, 8-0, as Post led the entire first half.
While the third had been the strongest quarter for the Eagles as of late, it would be a different story today as Chestnut Hill would work its way back into the affair, eventually taking its first lead of the game. Trailing by six, 33-27, with 6:33 left, sophomore forward Tiayo Adelekan would score four consecutive points for the Griffins, which started a 6-0 run to tie the game up at 33 all.
In response, graduate forward
Megan Landsiedel would hit a three, starting a 7-0 run for the Eagles, which featured a momentum-shifting three-point play by Tyson. However, the momentum would be short-lived with Adelekan's layup starting a stretch in which the Griffins put up 10 of the next 12 points to take their first lead, 43-41. Tyson would respond by hitting a shot at the buzzer, tying the game at 43 heading into the final frame.
Tamoun, who led Chestnut Hill with 21 points, would get going in the fourth, hitting back-to-back threes, which gave her team the lead again, 49-47, marking the final time in which the Griffins would lead for the remainder of the afternoon. From there, Tyson would finish on a layup following a turnover by freshman forward Kourin Carew. starting a 5-0 run by the Eagles, which put them ahead by three, 52-49, with 6:17 left.
While Carew would make up for the game-tying turnover moments later to pull Chestnut Hill within one, 52-51, that was the closest the visitors got the rest of the way. Down to the wire with three minutes left, Tamoun's three once again made it a one-point affair, 55-54, before Tyson and Landsiedel went back to work to re-up the lead to five points with back-to-back baskets.
Inside the final 1:15, Rossignol would score six consecutive points, while Post connected on all six of their free throws, icing away the game, 67-56. The junior finished with 14 points on 4-for-13 shooting, going 6-for-6 at the free throw line, while Day-Cox was the other double-digit scorer for the Eagles with 10 points. Outside of Tamoun's 21 points, Adelekan finished as the only other Griffin in double figures with 12 points in the loss.
