WORCHESTER, Mass. – Three different players would find the back of the net for Post University Men's Ice Hockey, but the Eagle defense could not stop an aggressive Assumption University offense, which put up eight goals, a record in the all-time series, on Friday night in Worcester, Massachusetts, downing Post for the sixth consecutive time, 8-3.
THE BASICS
Post University 3, Assumption University 8
Post University (3-15-1, 2-9-1 NE10)
Assumption University (13-7-2, 8-2-2 NE10)
HOW IT HAPPENED
A career season for sophomore defenseman
Eoin Reager continued in the first period as he netted his fourth goal of the year and second against the Greyhounds in four games against them just over halfway through the frame. But within a span of 59 seconds, Assumption answered back to take a 2-1 lead into the second with scores from both freshman forward Jake Russell and sophomore defenseman Shane McElhaney.
Senior goalie
Benjamin Cunneen made his first start since January 13th, making 14 stops in the first and allowing two goals, while sophomore goalie Michael Salvatore nearly equaled his mark, allowing the one goal to Reager. However, the second would see Cunneen pulled for freshman goalie
John Simon, after making 16 saves, as Assumption erupted with three goals in the first 5:09 of the period.
Junior forward
Connor McCowell would cut into the deficit with his second goal of the season on the power play, but on a power play later in the frame for Post, McElhaney would get the goal back against Simon, making it 6-2 after 40 minutes of action. In all, McElhaney and Russell each have two goals up to that point, while freshman defenseman Andrew Toomey and junior forward Daniel Lemanski each accounted for the other two goals.
Junior forward Nick Fall would finish with three points for Assumption, recording three assists, as the Greyhounds tacked on two more goals from junior forward Sean Donoghue and sophomore forward Declan Chapman, before senior forward
Baxter Kimball got one back for the Eagles at the end of regulation in the 8-3 defeat.
