PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Playing two games in the span of 24 hours, Post University Women's Basketball had its hands full to start the weekend in Friday's rescheduled game against Jefferson University on the road. After a slow start for both teams, the CACC Championship Runner-Ups from a year ago in the Rams pulled away in the second half for a 00-point victory, 62-45, behind a team-leading 19-point outing from junior guard Emma Spratt.
THE BASICS
Post University 45, Jefferson University 62
Post University (1-6, 0-3 CACC)
Jefferson University (9-4, 3-2 CACC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither side would reach double-digit scoring in the opening 10 minutes of action, hitting a combined five shots from the field. Both sophomore guard
Jasmine Day-Cox and junior forward
Emma Carman each knocked down a three during a 2-for-14 (14.3%) first quarter for the Eagles, but things would not go much better for the Rams either.
Shooting 3-for-15 (20%) from the floor, sophomore forward Carolyn Sipprell had four of Jefferson's seven points, while sophomore forward Gabby Recinto had the other three points. As a result of the start, Post led by one, 8-7, despite being outrebounded 16-9 overall and 6-2 on the offensive boards, while holding a 7-2 edge in turnovers.
While the shots would start to fall, turnovers would start becoming an issue, leading to a scoreless final 3:22 of the half for both teams. While Jefferson would head into halftime with a three-point lead, 21-18, they would not score for the remaining 4:50 of the half after freshman guard Ana Pellecchia's jumper gave them a five-point lead, 21-16.
In that same stretch, Post would only convert one basket on a layup from junior forward
Alyssa Rossignol, as the Eagles closed 6-for-27 (22.2%) from the floor, four of which came from three-point land, with the Rams only slightly ahead at a 34.5% clip after making 10-for-29 shots. Carman closed the half with a team-best eight points, hitting all three of her shots, including two from long range.
Spratt came alive in the second, hitting three shots from the field, giving her a team-high six points at the break for the Rams. While Jefferson shot 50% in the second frame, six turnovers gave them a total of 13, resulting in only five points off turnovers for Post, who had seven turnovers, including five in the second.
Out of halftime, Spratt would be the one to break the 5:08 stretch of scoreless ball for the Rams with her driving layup, sparking a 6-0 run over the first minute-and-a-half of the third, extending Jefferson's lead to a game-high nine points, 27-18. That lead would balloon to as many as 18 points in the frame, 44-26, as Spratt exploded for 11 points, giving her 17 points overall on 8-for-15 shooting. As a team, the Rams outscored Post by a 25-13 margin, limiting the turnovers to just three for the quarter while shooting 10-for-16 (62.5%), with half of those shots coming from Spratt alone.
Despite an even fourth quarter, that 12-point scoring edge that the Rams created in the third quarter would hold up for a 17-point victory, 62-45, sending Post to 0-3 in conference play and 1-6 overall. Rossignol would end up finishing with the team lead in points for the Eagles with 15 points in 32 minutes, scoring seven points at the free throw line, while grabbing eight rebounds to fall just two short of a double-double. In total, seven different Post players scored in the game, but only Rossignol finished in double digits.
