PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Coming off a nine-day break due to a rainout last week, Post University returned to head-to-head conference competition on Tuesday afternoon, hitting the road to face Chestnut Hill College for their second matchup against the Griffins this season, falling 5-2, dropping their sixth consecutive match to start the season.
THE BASICS
Post University 2, Chestnut Hill College 5
Post University (0-6, 0-3 CACC)
Chestnut Hill College (3-3, 2-3 CACC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Griffins, who were shorthanded heading into the match with only five players, allowed Post to capture a win in the #3 Doubles by forfeit as well as the #6 Singles match since nobody could match up against senior
Gioia Turco in the slot. The Eagles would use that extra point in the Doubles to their advantage, capturing the single team point as junior
Ana Vasilis and freshman
Vitalina Sokoliuk were winners in the #2 Doubles, 6-1, over junior Lillian Bandel and senior Claudia Rasilla Romero to take a 1-0 lead heading into Singles. This would be despite dropping the #1 Doubles, in which sophomores
Julie Merlin and
Laura Kotala fell in a 6-0 sweep to junior Elena Arenas Guisasola and freshman Milica Zagorac.
Ahead 2-0 with the win by default in the #6 Singles, the Eagles needed just three wins to earn their first victory of the season, but would be swept out of all five Singles by the Griffins. At the top of the ladder, Vasilis and Arenas Guisasol did battle to a Chestnut Hill victory in 6-2 and 6-0 fashion, while the #2 Singles win for Zagorac or Merlin went 6-3 and 6-1.
Freshman Veronika Lundgren, who did not play in the Doubles, won the #3 Singles with identical 6-2 set wins, while Rasilla Romero defeated Kotala in the #4 Singles, 6-2 and 6-1. Rounding out the five Singles wins en route to a 5-2 win was Bandel with her #5 Singles win over freshman
Savannah Croft, 6-3 and 6-2.
