Softball Swept by Assumption University to Start Off 10-Game Homestand

WATERBURY, Conn. – Returning to LaMoy Field for the first time since before spring break, Post University Softball was swept by Assumption University in a pair of five-inning, eight-run mercy rule affairs in which they were outscored by the Greyhounds by a combined 20-1 on Wednesday afternoon. Freshman utility player Angelica Tomkins notched the only RBI of the day for the Eagles, who fell 10-1 in game one before dropping game two, 10-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 1, Assumption University 10 (5 Innings)
A seven-run first inning led the way for the Greyhounds, who had just three hits in the frame but capitalized on three Post errors in the infield. Back-to-back errors from Tompkins and senior third baseman Nyla Sapia plated the first run of the game before junior outfielder Kaylee Lacomb's single brought across another run for the visitors.

The big blow of the first came when junior infielder Maddy Bland cleared the bases with a three-run double against freshman right-hander Meghan McGurk, who threw 4 2/3 innings for Post. The culmination of the freshman's start ended with her allowing 10 runs (five earned) on seven hits with five walks and one strikeout, taking her fifth loss of the season on the mound. A trio of Assumption pitchers combined for the five innings in which they allowed one run on two hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

Bland was the lone Greyhound to have a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with that three-run double, and two runs scored, while six total Assumption players recorded hits and eight different ones recorded at least one RBI, with Bland leading the way with her three. Senior infielder Bailey Dickenson and Tompkins, who had the lone RBI of the day for the Eagles, accounted for the only two Post hits.

Game 2: Post University 0, Assumption University 10 (5 Innings)
Tagging sophomore right-hander Allysa Calabrese for four runs in the first inning, the Assumption offense was off to the races once again as they closed the day scoring 11 first-inning runs in total between the two games of the doubleheader. Junior utility player Kaitlyn Cahill started things off with a triple and scored on the first of three errors in game two for the Eagles during junior infielder Naomi Cohen's at-bat. RBI singles from freshman catcher Molly Green and freshman infielder Ella McColgan led to the other three runs of the inning for the Greyhounds.

Cahill, who led the game off with that triple, finished 3-for-3, just shy of the cycle after having a single, double, and triple to go along with her three runs scored. Green had a big day, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs all via singles, while sophomore infielder Ava McNamara hit an inside-the-park home run to cap off the 10-0 victory for the Greyhounds in their doubleheader sweep.

Calabrese would take her second loss of the season on the mound, going three innings in which she allowed seven runs (four earned) on nine hits with a strikeout. Both sophomore left-hander Devin Barnett and senior right-hander Alyssa Hughes each saw one inning of work, allowing a combined three runs on four hits with two walks in the loss for Post. Junior pitchers Kaelin Waldron and Kya Birtz earned the combined shutout for Assumption, allowing no runs on five hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.
