Baseball Swept by Bentley University in Saturday Afternoon Doubleheader, Drop to 0-7 to Start the Season

WAPPINGER FALLS, N.Y.  – Graduate infielder Hayden Roberge extended his hitting streak to six consecutive games as well as his on-base streak to seven consecutive games for Post University Baseball as part of a 5-for-7 doubleheader afternoon, but the Eagles are still in search of their first win of the season after being swept by Bentley University at Heritage Financial Field in Wappinger Falls, New York on Saturday.

Falling in game one, which went 10 innings, 7-4, and then dropping game two, 3-2, in six innings after being called due to darkness, Post sits at 0-7 to start the 2025 season and have now lost nine consecutive games dating back to last season's NCAA Regional in Rockville Centre, New York.

THE BASICS

Post University 4, Bentley University 7 (10 Innings)

Post University 2, Bentley University 3 (6 Innings)

Post University (0-7)

Bentley University (7-2)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 4, Bentley University 7 (10 Innings)
Sophomore outfielder Dario Sosa got the bats going for Post in the second inning with a sacrifice fly to give them an early 1-0 lead which held until the fifth inning. Sophomore infielder Brendan Sencaj tied the game at one all with his RBI single off of senior right-hander Brennan Holligan, who was equally as dominant as his counterpart in junior left-hander Pat Heber in his Saturday start.

Lasting five innings, Holligan allowed just that one run on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks, stepping things up from his first start of the season in which he allowed six runs. As for Heber, he would last six innings in which he allowed three runs but only one would be earned on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks. The other two runs of Heber's afternoon came in the sixth when a fielder's choice by Sosa with two on and one out led to a throwing error by graduate infielder Jack Matthews, which plated a run for Post, while another fielder's choice by senior infielder Hunter Keller tacked on the other.

With Holligan exiting, in came sophomore right-hander Jack Martineau and in the seventh inning the Falcons would get those runs back and take their first lead of the affair, 4-3. Senior outfielder Stan DeMartinis had the first blow with his RBI single, but the bigger blow came from senior infielder Nick Pappas with his two-run triple off Martineau.

Forcing eventual extra innings, sophomore infielder Jesse Alfalla plated the game-tying run with his RBI single in the eighth, but the Eagles would leave the bases loaded with two outs in that inning. Struggles from the Post bullpen in the tenth would be the difference maker in game one as a leadoff walk issued to Pappas ended up starting the offense for Bentley to the tune of three runs via an RBI single by senior catcher Patrick Purcell and a two-run single by junior infielder Tommy Bolton. Shutting the door on a 7-4 win for the Falcons was graduate right-hander Joey Sangiuolo in his second inning of work, retiring the Eagles in order in the bottom of the frame.

Game 2: Post University 2, Bentley University 3 (6 Innings)
A game shortened to six innings instead of the scheduled seven innings due to darkness at Heritage Financial Park, offense would be a little harder to come by for both teams in what ended up being a 3-2 finish in favor of the Falcons. Sophomore right-hander Sebastian Velasquez got the start on the bump for the Eagles and would allow the first run of the game on an RBI double by DeMartini in the opening inning to give Bentley an early 1-0 lead.

Velasquez would last only 2 2/3 innings in which he allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits with five strikeouts and four walks. In the third, he would be tagged for two more runs as an RBI single from Purcell made it a two-run game in favor of the Falcons. The sophomore would exit with two outs and two on for sophomore right-hander Jake Baumann, who after a balk which gave Bentley their third and final run of the game, got Bolton swinging to end the inning.

Baumann would not allow another run from there, polishing off the final three innings to close the game, allowing no runs on two hits with five strikeouts and that balk which saw the run get charged to Velasquez since Baumann inherited the runner. Graduate outfielder Jaylen Kelley gave Post some life in the fifth inning with her two-run single with one out, making it a 3-2 ballgame with two runners on and only one down.

However, senior right-hander Harper Flint would enter to retire the next two Post hitters and after loading the bases with Eagles in the sixth with two outs, retired sophomore infielder Maico Cardona to end the inning. At that point with the sun setting, the game would be called after six innings, giving Bentley the doubleheader sweep following a 3-2 victory.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Hayden Roberge continued to shine for Post University, going 5-for-7 with a double, a walk, and a run scored in the doubleheader -- Roberge is now riding a six-game hitting streak while reaching base safely in all seven games after going 0-for-3 in the first game of the season, but being hit by a pitch
  • Against Bentley University, Post University remains winless in the head-to-head series which started during the 2022 season, sitting at 0-3 now all-time against the Falcons
  • Dating back to last season, Post University has lost nine consecutive games after dropping their first two games of the NCAA Regional last spring
  • This is the first time since the 2021 season in which Post University has started the season 0-7 and only the third time in program history since the 1995 season (NAIA) with the other instance being the 2003 season
