TORRINGTON, Conn. -- With a Nor'easter moving into Connecticut late this weekend and lasting through the day on Monday, Post University Women's Tennis moved indoors to the Pinewoods Tennis Club in Torrington, Connecticut, on Monday afternoon to take on Goldey-Beacom College in their first of two matches in the venue over the next couple of days.
The Eagles, needing to win out to have a chance at the CACC Tournament over their last three matches, would get swept by the Lightning, 7-0, ending their postseason hopes as Post's season will come to a close on Wednesday afternoon. This will be only the fourth time since 2015 in which the Eagles have missed the CACC Tournament, as well as their second consecutive season overall.
THE BASICS
Post University 0, Goldey-Beacom College 7
Post University (0-11, 0-8 CACC)
Goldey-Beacom College (4-4, 4-4 CACC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
With an injury to senior
Gioia Turco as well as junior
Ana Vasilis missing the match, the Eagles were down to just four players on Monday against the Lightning, automatically giving them both the #5 and #6 Singles as well as the #3 Doubles. This meant that Goldey-Beacom already held a 2-0 lead before the match started and needed just one Doubles win to clinch the Doubles point and force the Eagles to win the four Singles matches to earn their first victory of the season.
Sophomores
Julie Merlin and
Laura Kotala would fall in the #1 Doubles, giving the Lightning three team points, as sophomore Camilla Franzin and senior Lucia Corte won 6-1, while freshman Jenna Frank and senior Nahomi Quinonez held off freshmen
Vitalina Sokoliuk and
Savannah Croft, 6-4, to win the #2 Doubles.
The Lightning would take all four Singles matches in two sets each as Franzin was a 6-2 and 6-1 winner over Merlin in the #1 Singles, securing the team win for Goldey-Beacom, while Quinonez fought off Sokoliuk in the #2 Singles, 6-3 and 6-4. Rounding out the afternoon, Frank took down Kotala in the #3 Singles, 6-2 and 6-1, while Corte was a 6-4 and 6-1 winner in the #4 Singles against Croft.
BY THE NUMBERS
