SHELTON, Conn. – Returning for their first game since the December break in which Post University Men's Ice Hockey swept Assumption University at home, the Eagles opened 2025 at home against SUNY Morrisville in a non-conference matchup on Friday night, falling in shutout fashion, 2-0, to the Mustangs.
THE BASICS
Post University 0, SUNY Morrisville 2
Post University (4-8-0)
SUNY Morrisville (2-11-0)
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first period would be owned by the visiting Mustangs who rattled off a total of 18 shots on goal against junior goalie
Benjamin Cunneen in the opening 20 minutes of play to just five shots on net for the Eagles on junior goalie Grant Linville. Outside of that, nearly everything else would be even on the scoresheet with both teams taking two penalties and winning 10 faceoffs each.
However, freshman forward Maxim Maziarchuk would be the reason SUNY Morrisville took a 1-0 lead into the second period. Dancing around the net with the puck, Maziarchuk netted a power-play goal from junior forwards Ryan Glazer and Tyler Zembrzycki, beating Cunneen on the left side of the net just under 14 minutes through the frame.
A fast start to the second saw the Mustangs double their lead to two goals as only 38 seconds in it was sophomore forward Ethan Henry tipping the shot by Glazer from the point past Cunneen after receiving it from Zembryzycki, making it a 2-0 game in the early going. That would be all the scoring in the period as offense was hard to come by with SUNY Morrisville holding a narrow 8-7 shots on goal margin and both teams hitting the power play once with no luck.
Nothing would do for either side in the third and final period as Cunneen and Linville went toe-to-toe in goal with neither goalie letting up a score to their opposition. Once again, SUNY Morrisville held a slight edge in shots on goal by a 9-7 margin, finishing the game with 35 total shots and forcing Cunneen to make 33 saves while Linville made 19 saves and earned his first collegiate shut out, sending Post to a 2-0 loss to kick off the 2025 half of the season.
