Hannah Saunders Sets Single-Season and Program Record for Goalie Wins, Women's Ice Hockey Completes Weekend Sweep of Assumption

SHELTON, Conn. – Junior goalie Hannah Saunders became the winningest goalie in program history for both a single season and career en route to her fourth shutout of the season and the seventh of her career as Post University Women's Ice Hockey finished off the weekend sweep of Assumption University with a 2-0 win on the back end of the home-and-home series.

The win marks the first time the Eagles have defeated the Greyhounds in regulation as well as swept them during the weekend. Now at eight wins this season in conference play, Post has set a new single-season record, surpassing last season's seven conference wins under Head Coach Gretchen Silverman.

THE BASICS

Post University 2, Assumption University 0

Post University (8-15-3, 8-9-3 NEWHA)

Assumption University (6-17-3, 6-12-0 NEWHA)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Like in the matchup on Friday afternoon, it would be a battle between the goalies in Saunders and graduate guard Carissa Mudrak, who were both perfect through the first period of action. On Saunders' end, she would make 10 saves on 10 attempts by the Greyhounds while Mudrak countered with nine saves on her own on all nine attempts by the Eagles to keep things scoreless.

Outside of the two goals scored by Post, there would not be a large number of opportunities for either side, and neither would be sent to the penalty box in the affair to allow the other to get on the power play. It was the first time since February 24th, 2024 against Saint Anselm College in the second game of the NEWHA Tournament Quarterfinals in which the Eagles did not draw a single penalty and only the fourth time in program history. Only one time in program history did Post have a game in which neither team drew a penalty which was in their inaugural season against Plymouth State University on December 10th, 2016 when the Eagles won 11-0.

Breaking the seal on the scoreless tie was sophomore forward Noa Farberman with the help of fellow sophomores in forward Macy Peterson and defenseman Jodie Rose with 6:30 left in the second period. Meanwhile, Saunders needed to make just six saves in net compared to 15 for Mudrak as the Eagles took a 1-0 lead into the third.

While Saunders finished off the final frame with seven more saves for a total of 23 in the game, freshman forward Rowyn Ringor padded the Post lead with her eighth goal of the season on a breakaway off a turnover in the neutral zone to help Post finish off the sweep with a 2-0 win. That goal for Ringor gave her 20 points on the season which leads the Eagles this season and the entire conference while putting her five points away from tying Jenna Abeyta for the single-season record.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Rowyn Ringor's third-period goal gives her 20 points on the season which leads the team and the conference this season -- Ringor is five points away from tying Jenna Abeyta for most points in a single season at 25 points
  • Hannah Saunders surpasses Grace Glasrud and Jenna Baumgartner for most single-season wins in program history with six after her win on Saturday afternoon while setting the new program record for wins in a career at 11, surpassing Grace Glasurd's 10 career wins from 2021-24
  • Earning her fourth shutout win of the season, Hannah Saunders continues to expand on her program record for single-season shutouts and all-time shutouts as she now has seven in her career which is four more than Jenna Baumgartner who she entered the season tied with at three for the record
  • This is the first time in program history in which Post University has swept Assumption University as well as the first time they have beaten the Greyhounds in regulation -- Entering the day, the Eagles had won both of their games against Assumption in overtime
  • With eight wins in conference play this season, that is a new single-season record for Post University as they surpassed their record of seven wins set last season -- Post is four wins away from tying the program record for most wins in a single season at 12 set during the 2019-20 season
WHO'S NEXT
The Eagles will return home next weekend for two consecutive games against Saint Anselm College on Friday evening at 8:00 PM and Saturday afternoon at 2:30 PM.  In their two road matchups back in November, Post fell 2-1 against the Hawks and then lost 2-1 in a shootout after being tied at two following regulation and overtime.
