Conference Winning Streak Ends at Five for Men's Ice Hockey in Shutout Loss to Saint Michael's

COLCHESTER, Vt. – With a chance to move up in the Northeast-10 standings with a win, Post University Men's Ice Hockey was unable to continue their five-game conference winning streak as well as their three-game winning streak on Saturday afternoon against Saint Michael's College on the road, 3-0, suffering their fifth shutout loss of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
In total, Post would spend over 10 minutes on the penalty kill as a result of six total infractions throughout the game, leading to one power-play goal in the third period for Saint Michael's College. This entire weekend, the Purple Knights had a total of 11 power-play chances, converting on two of them while the Eagles finished 2-for-10 on the power play after having four more today and being unable to score against freshman goalie Evan Plunkett.

Plunkett would end up with his fourth shutout of the season for Saint Michael's after stopping all 30 shots he faced from the Eagles. Opposite of him and looking for his eighth win of the season, junior goalie Benjamin Cunneen made 37 saves while allowing three goals across his 60 minutes of action, giving up one in the second period and two in the third period of action. 

Between the two teams, 97 penalty minutes were issued with Post getting awarded 54 minutes to the 33 minutes for Saint Michael's College. Junior forward Joe Santoro had a game-high and program-record 34 penalty minutes while a total of five misconduct penalties, 11 minor penalties, and one major penalty were handed out in the game. 

Junior forward Quinn McCarthy tallied two assists for the Purple Knights while senior defenseman Case Kantgias, sophomore forward Ty Bloom, and sophomore forward Brayden Naumann each scored in the 3-0 win.

  • Aidan Canady's point streak ended at four straight games in today's loss -- Canady had six points during the four-game stretch heading into the day with one goal and five assists
  • Evan Plunkett recorded his fourth shutout of the season, stopping all 30 shots he faced from the Post University offense today 
  • This was the fifth time this season in which Post University has been shutout which is the most single-season shutouts they have had since the 2016-17 season when they had six shutouts 
  • Post University falls to 7-17 all-time against Saint Michael's College and have lost 11 of their last 12 head-to-heads since their January 13th, 2023 loss on the road 
WHO'S NEXT
Post University kicks off a trio of home games at the Sports Center of Connecticut next Tuesday against Franklin Pierce University at 1:00 PM. The Eagles took down the Raven this past Tuesday on the road, 4-3, after falling down by two goals early on in the matchup as two goals from junior forward Nathan McDevitt helped Post complete the comeback.
