Split Decision! Softball Snaps 12-Game Losing Streak with Game Two Victory Over STAC

SPARKILL, N.Y. – It was a much-needed win for Post University Softball on Tuesday afternoon against St. Thomas Aquinas College in game two of the doubleheader. After losing game one in shutout fashion, 4-0, marking the 14th time this season the Eagles have been shut out, a comeback and five-run eighth inning in game two snapped a 12-game losing streak as Post heads into their final doubleheader of the season tomorrow on a high note with an 8-3 win.

THE BASICS

Post University 0, St. Thomas Aquinas College 4

Post University 8, St. Thomas Aquinas College 3 (8 Innings)

Post University (6-38)

St. Thomas Aquinas College (25-19)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 0, St. Thomas Aquinas College 4
Senior right-hander Maddison Caldwell had a solid start for Post, going the full six innings in which she allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits with one strikeout, one walk, and one hit batter. But those four runs were more than enough for the Spartans to take game one as the Eagle offense was shut down by senior pitcher Sarah Clancy who got her 13th win of the season on the mound.

Clancy shut down the Post offense to the tune of allowing four runs while striking out eight batters and walking just one in the 4-0 victory. The Eagles would only get runners in scoring position during the fifth inning when a walk to freshman utility player Allysa Calabrese followed by a bunt single for junior infielder Brooke Dickenson put runners on first and second with one out in what was a 1-0 game. After that, senior outfielder Carli Perruso moved the runners over to second and third with her sacrifice bunt before senior shortstop Caitlin DeAngelis was rung up by Clancy swinging.

Freshman infielder Jessica Feerick's RBI single in the third had made it a 1-0 game at the time and after the missed opportunity by Post in the fifth, three more runs came across in the sixth for St. Thomas Aquinas. Sophomore utility player Eliana Raposo singled home sophomore infielder Elysa Marcano due to an errant throw followed by a two-run single for freshman infielder Olivia Leon, giving the Spartans their four runs and eventual 4-0 shutout win.

Game 2: Post University 8, St. Thomas Aquinas College 3 (8 Innings)
Raposo would strike first for St. Thomas Aquinas in the first inning with her solo home run to left off of freshman left-hander Devin Barnett who got the start in game two. Just one frame later, junior infielder Bailey Dickenson answered back with a sacrifice fly off of Raposo, tying the game at one all which is where it would stand for the next three innings as Barnett and Raposo settled in.

Breaking the 1-1 tie was DeAngelis with her RBI single in the fifth which put runners on second and third with two outs before graduate outfielder Samantha Riccardulli's foul out ended the inning. Answering back in the bottom half of the fifth was the Spartans as Raposo helped her cause with a game-tying double followed by an RBI single from senior infielder Tara Hagan to score her and give St. Thomas Aquinas the lead back, 3-2.

It would be senior infielder Lily Tomasiello's ninth home run of the season, which tied her for the most home runs in a single season in program history, evening the score at three apiece and sending the two teams into extra innings as both sides left runners on base in the seventh. Starting in the eighth, the international tiebreaker rule took effect, putting a runner on second to start the inning for both teams.

A five-run inning for the Eagles would see senior infielder Julia Maida single home the international runner in Riccardulli before a two-run double by Calabrese and RBI single from Perruso made it an 8-3 game. That would ultimately be the final score as Post snapped their 12-game losing streak after Barnett retired the side 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning.
