Softball Mercied in Game One, Barnett Deals in Game Two Loss to Felician University

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – A game one mercy rule defeat for Post University Softball turned into a one-hour pitcher's duel in game two against Felician University as the Eagles looked to salvage a split following their 8-0 loss to start their road conference doubleheader on Wednesday. Freshman left-hander Devin Barnett had her best outing of the season, but a bunt and an error on the same play in the bottom of the seventh led to the game-winning run scoring for the Golden Falcons who swept Post with a 1-0 win in game two.

THE BASICS

Post University 0, Felician University 8 (5 Innings)

Post University 0, Felician University 1

Post University (3-17, 0-4 CACC)

Felician University (9-19, 4-2 CACC)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 0, Felician University 8 (5 Innings)
Freshman utility player Allysa Calabrese got the lone hit of the game for the Eagles in the fifth inning off of sophomore pitcher Riley Williams to narrowly avoid a no-hitter for Post. Williams earned her fifth win of the season after allowing that one hit to Calabrese in five innings while striking out four Eagle hitters and walking none.

Freshman second baseman Sadie Kittoe led the offense for Felician with a 1-for-2 day, driving in three runs on a two-run double and the game-winning sacrifice fly in the fifth to secure the 8-0 shut out win for the Golden Falcons. Senior third baseman Daisha Howard also had a multi-RBI game after going 1-for-1 with a triple and sacrifice fly.

In the 8-0 loss, senior right-hander Maddison Caldwell started and threw 2 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on five hits with two walks, two hit batters, and one strikeout. In relief, junior right-hander Alyssa Hughes pitched the final two innings of the game, allowing the final run of the game on one hit with a hit batter.

Game 1: Post University 0, Felician University 1
Barnett was as efficient as anybody could ask for on the mound for Post, throwing just 51 pitches by the end of the game. The freshman entered the fifth with only 35 pitches under her belt and by the time the seventh inning had rolled around, allowed just two hits. But she was matched by Williams who got the ball in game two.

Right out of the gate, the Eagles had their opportunity to score with the bases loaded and only one out, but back-to-back strikeouts by Williams, who had four in game two, ended the threat. Post would also put runners on first and second in the second with nothing to show for it and then threaten once more in the fifth with a leadoff double by graduate outfielder Samantha Riccardulli who moved to third with one out after senior shortstop Caitlin DeAngelis grounded out after the double.

With two cracks at the go-ahead run, Williams would get senior catcher Julianna Cicala to ground out and senior infielder Lily Tomasiello to strike out, escaping the threat. Sophomore outfielder Hannah Ramirez, who had two of three hits in game two, led off the seventh with a single to send senior infielder Alexis Velotta to the plate. Velotta attempted to sacrifice Ramirez to second as the ball died in front of the plate where it was bobbled by sophomore catcher Brianna Hynds.

Still with a potential play at first, Hynds was finally able to snag the ball but her throw sailed into right field over the head of senior utility player Julia Maida which allowed Ramirez to come around and score the game-winning run to give Felician a 1-0 win and the doubleheader sweep.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Devin Barnett had her best outing of the season, allowing one unearned run on three hits while striking out two and walking no batters in the game-two defeat
  • Riley Williams pitched both games for Felician, combining for 12 innings of shutout ball while allowing four hits, striking out eight, walking two, and hitting a batter in the sweep to move to 6-8 on the season
  • Post University is now 2-14 on the season when allowing the first run of the game while remaining 1-2 when scoring first
  • Being shut out in both games of the doubleheader, that is the ninth and tenth time this season Post University has been held scoreless, tying them with the 2008 team for second-most in a season – The most single-season shutout losses was 12 back in 2013

WHO'S NEXT

Post University will have a day off before opening a four-game homestand on Friday with a doubleheader against Goldey-Beacom College at LaMoy Field. Game one is scheduled for 1:00 PM. The Eagles have lost three of their last four games to the Lightning and split their doubleheader last spring on the road, winning game one, 4-1, before being shut out, 3-0 in game two.
