Softball Swept in Second Day of Back-to-Back Doubleheader Road Games

WORCESTER, Mass. – After another offensive struggle in game one for Post University Softball, the Eagle offense came alive in game two looking for a come-from-behind victory against Assumption University in their second day of a back-to-back doubleheader. However, a two-run fourth inning for the Greyhounds in a game that was shortened to just five innings propelled them to a doubleheader sweep of Post with a 7-5 win, handing the Eagles their fourth consecutive loss.

THE BASICS

Post University 1, Assumption University 7

Post University 5, Assumption University 7 (5 Innings)

Post University (2-14)

Assumption University (6-8)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 1, Assumption University 7
Senior right-hander Maddison Caldwell took the mound in game one, allowing the first run of the game in the second inning on an RBI groundout by graduate outfielder Jordan Dwyer to give Assumption the early 1-0 lead. That would be met with a response by senior shortstop Caitlin DeAngelis in the third with her RBI double which scored the game-tying run.

But it would be the Greyhound offense going right back to work against Caldwell to score six unanswered runs over the next three innings to take game one, 7-1. Senior utility player Lauren Geremia knocked in a run with her RBI bunt single for the first of two third-inning runs by Assumption. A fielder's choice by Dwyer and a two-run double from sophomore infielder Emma Bloom expanded on the lead while an RBI single in the fifth for junior infielder Alyssa Johnson rounded out the scoring.

Freshman right-hander Zoey McDonough secured the win for the Greyhounds after pitching the last five innings in which she allowed no runs on one hit with five strikeouts and three walks. Caldwell fell to 0-4 for Post after allowing seven runs in six innings on nine hits with a strikeout and a walk in the 7-1 defeat.

Game 2: Post University 5, Assumption University 7 (5 Innings)
The Eagles would have their opportunities to score in the first inning as they loaded the bases with only one out against freshman right-hander Lexi Thompson, who was lifted after four batters. In relief, junior left-hander Anna Tassone managed to escape the inning only giving up a run when senior outfielder Julia Maida grounded into a fielder's choice.

The Greyhounds would respond in the bottom half of the inning with four runs on just one hit as junior right-hander Alyssa Hughes would struggle with her control early on in the game. Hughes walked the first two batters she faced, leading to senior infielder Corin Mahan's game-tying fielder's choice followed by senior infielder Summer Sheerin's RBI bunt single. Two more runs would come in on a pair of wild pitches by Hughes to give Assumption a 4-1 lead after one.

Sophomore utility player Jaiden Tonucci's sacrifice fly extended the lead to four runs before the Eagles came back with four unanswered runs to tie the game. Loading the bases up again, this time with nobody out, Maida would walk to make it a 5-2 game and then senior infielder Jenny Riquelme's bases-clearing double tied the game at five all after three.
Freshman Grace Heim gave the Greyhounds the lead for good in the fourth with her two-run single while Post would strand runners on first and second with two outs in the fifth in what would ultimately be the last inning of the game due to rain in the area, leading to the 7-5 win for Assumption and the doubleheader sweep.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • With her three-run double in game two, Jenny Riquelme snapped an 0-for-15 stretch that lasted seven games in which she had an at-bat – Riquelme started the season 2-for-2 against Franklin Pierce
  • Post University is now 1-12 on the season when allowing the first run of the game and loses for the first time when scoring first in a game after going up first in game two (1-1 overall)
  • With five runs in game two, this marks the fourth time this season the Eagle offense has put up five-plus runs in a game – Post is 2-2 when scoring five-plus runs this season
  • This is the eighth time this season in which Post University has been shut out which is the most since they were shut out seven times in 2018 – In program history, the Eagles have been shut out eight times in four seasons (2002, 2006, 2010), were shut out 10 times in 2008, and had a program-record 12 shutouts in 2013
