Semon's Strong Start Coupled by Byrd's Big Finish Propels Baseball to Myrtle Beach Win

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Looking to get back in the win column, Post University Baseball opened up their trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with a matchup of East Region teams as they took on Franklin Pierce at Ebbets Field. Coming into the game the Ravens were ranked third in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association East Region Poll while the Eagles had dropped to a 10th-place tie following a five-game losing streak.

Behind a five-run third inning and capitalizing on six errors by the Ravens, the Eagles got a big East Region win over Franklin Pierce, 8-3, snapping their five-game skid, and starting off their trip with a victory.

THE BASICS

Post University 8, Franklin Pierce University 3

Post University (2-5)

Franklin Pierce University (0-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Senior starting pitcher Matt Semon took the mound for the third time this season and would eventually settle down to get the win in his six-inning start. After allowing two runs through two innings on RBI singles by junior infielder Kiobel Lugo and sophomore outfielder Joey Acker, Semon would allow just one run the rest of his outing while the offense went to work for Post.

Three errors in the third inning led to five runs for the Eagles on just four hits as an error to leadoff the inning got senior outfielder Michael Pavelchak on base before back-to-back singles loaded the bases for Post with nobody out. That was when junior first baseman Chris Corchado reached first on an error by graduate catcher Christopher Roberti, who had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame, which allowed two runs to score for the Eagles to tie the game up at two all. Two ground outs and an RBI single by freshman first baseman Dario Sosa did the rest of the damage against senior right-handed pitcher Kyle Roche as Post took a 5-3 lead after three innings.

Corcchado would come to the dish to extend Post's lead to four runs with an RBI single in the fourth while Pavelchak tacked on one more for good measure in the ninth with his RBI single to help the Eagles get that 8-3 win. Meanwhile, in relief, graduate right-hander Nathaniel Byrd was dominant in his third appearance of the season as he picked up a three-inning save in the game. Byrd pitched the final three innings while allowing just two runners to reach via hits, striking out three, and allowing no runs to help secure the victory.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Michael Pavelchak extended his on-base streak to 16 straight games after a 1-for-4 game with an RBI and two walks

  • Evan Cornwell had a team and game-high three hits in five at-bats for Post University while scoring twice
