TIGERVILLE S.C. – Taking on the number two team in all of Division II baseball and the 2022 NCAA National Champions in a Friday afternoon doubleheader, Post University Baseball nearly mounted a comeback in the ninth inning of game one, falling 12-11, after scoring seven runs in the ninth inning before dropping the second game of the day, 8-1, against North Greenville University.

#2 North Greenville University (8-1)

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1: Post University 11, #2 North Greenville University 12

Getting the start for the second time this season, senior Matt Semon retired his first two batters before allowing junior corner infielder David Lewis to reach on an infield single. Three consecutive batters would reach via walk or hit by pitch, allowing Lewis to score and give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead. A leadoff walk by Semon to start the second would lead to North Greenville's second run of the game after a one-out triple by sophomore shortstop Zach Cowart brought freshman outfielder Thomas Powell home.

Cutting their deficit in half in the third, senior shortstop Evan Cornwell's one-out double helped plate one for the Eagles with two on and two outs when graduate outfielder DJ Caron singled off the leg of graduate starting pitcher Reece Fields and into right field making it a 2-1 ballgame while Semon escaped trouble with runners on the corners and two outs.

With Semons' pitch count up to 90 after four innings, he would exit for sophomore right-hander Vincent Borghese who allowed a leadoff home run to Lewis before eventually escaping a bases-loaded jam with the help of freshman first baseman Dario Sosa. Sosa would leap for a line drive hit by Powell and be in just the right spot to lunge at junior outfielder Dakota Britt trying to get back to first for the inning-ending double play, keeping the score at 3-1.

However, that would be the start of seven unanswered runs for North Greenville who plated seven more runs in the sixth and seventh innings combined. In that stretch, Post pitching would walk and hit three batters each as well as allow two wild pitches to plate a pair of runs. Singles by senior infielder Pat Monteith and junior infielder Brett Blomquist around a two-run home run by Lewis broke open a nine-run advantage for the Crusaders.

Trailing 10-1, the Eagles got three back in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by junior infielder Hunter Keller and Cornwell's two-run single which was immediately responded to by North Greenville with a two-run home run by Monteith. Scoring seven runs in the final inning, Post would bring the go-ahead run to the plate in junior third baseman Justin Rivera with runners on the corners and two outs who would be retired by senior right-hander Nate Roof as the Crusaders took the first game of the doubleheader, 12-11. Junior first baseman Chris Corchado went 3-for-3 in the game, knocking in two runs on his RBI single in the ninth.

Game 2: Post University 1, #2 North Greenville University 8

Coming off of that nearly four-hour affair, things would move fast in game two with both teams going scoreless in the first two innings. Four unearned runs issued to junior right-hander Brennan Holligan, who got the start for Post, would come on a passed ball to score Cowart, a sacrifice fly for junior second baseman Bryce Roddey, and a two-run single for freshman outfielder Josh Williams to put the Crusaders ahead 4-0 after three.

With freshman right-hander Jack Martineau in relief for the fourth, North Greenville would scrape across three more runs on a two-run double by sophomore catcher Jake Sears and Blomquist's RBI triple which he attempted to stretch into an inside-the-park home run but was thrown out at the plate on the relay.

A one-out double by junior catcher Jimmy Brennan ended the Crusaders' no-hit bid which lasted 7 1/3 innings and would eventually lead to the lone run of the game for Post on a fielder's choice by Caron to cut the deficit to six runs, 7-1.  The fourth error of the game for the Eagles would lead to the final run of the doubleheader on a single by senior shortstop Zach Zarra as Post was swept, 8-1, in their Friday doubleheader against North Greenville.
