WATERBURY, Conn. – For the first time since the 2021 season and only the second time since 2014, Post University Women's Tennis will miss the CACC Tournament as the Eagles were swept by Chestnut Hill College, 7-0, on Wednesday afternoon's Senior Day at Edgewood Bath and Tennis Club.
Entering the day, Post was two games back of Jefferson University with both teams have three conference matches left and the Rams owning the tiebreaker having swept the Eagles in the regular season series. With that in mind, Post would have needed to win out while Jefferson lost out in their final three conference matches to get into the four-team tournament, but with the loss to the Griffins today that scenario was out of the question.
THE BASICS
Post University 0, Chestnut Hill College 7
Post University (2-11, 1-7 CACC)
Chestnut Hill College (8-2, 6-1 CACC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
A set of sweeps for the Griffins in the Doubles would ensure they won that team point as the #2 Doubles ended first in a 6-0 win for senior Romi Meirovich and junior Claudia Rasilla over senior
Nina Langenfeld and freshman
Annelein Van Urk. Not long after that, the #3 Doubles was secured in 6-0 fashion by sophomore Elena Arenas Guisasola and freshman Annabel Snow over junior
Gioia Turco and freshman
Melanie Leussink.
Putting up a little bit of a battle in the #1 Doubles was senior
Megan Lombardt and freshman
Julie Merlin against fifth-year player Alison Issac and sophomore Lilian Bandel before that duo would ultimately drop the match by a 6-2 score.
The Griffins would sweep through the Singles as well starting with Meirovich handling Van Urk in the #4 Singles with 6-1 and 6-0 scores followed by Rasilla against freshman
Romy Leussink in the #5 Singles which went down in 6-1 fashion for both sets. The #1 Singles would give Chestnut Hill the required four team points to win as Isaac handled Lombardt in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-2.
On the back end of the matches, Bandel was victorious in the #3 Singles over Langenfeld with a pair of 6-3 set wins followed by a pair of 6-4 set wins in the #2 Singles for Arenas Guisasola over Merlin.
Melanie Leussink in the #6 Singles for Post would capture set one in hopes of avoiding the sweep, but would drop set two, 6-2, and then the 10-point tiebreaker by a score of 10-6 against senior Anisha Reddy Thada as the Eagles fell 7-0 and dropped their fifth straight match.
