SHELTON, Conn. – It was another very evenly matched game for Post University Women's Ice Hockey in their home conference matchup against Franklin Pierce University on Saturday afternoon, but the bounces would not go the Eagles way into the back of the net against sophomore goalie Jill Hertl as they fell to the Ravens, 2-0. Senior goalie
Grace Glasrud made her second straight start for the Eagles and made 30 total saves in 60 minutes of action.
THE BASICS
Post University 0, Franklin Pierce University 2
Post University (6-22-0, 6-16-0 NEWHA)
Franklin Pierce University (13-12-0, 12-10-0 NEWHA)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Four first-period penalties led to a pair of man-up opportunities for both teams as the looked to be the first to get in front in the affair. Those two power-plays for the Ravens led to four shots while the two for the Eagles resulted in three shots their way as well as one for the opposition with neither side being able to break through. In total, both Glasrud and Hertl would each make 10 saves to send the game to the second in a scoreless tie like it was less than 24 hours ago on Friday.
But also similar to Friday's game would be the offensive rush by the Ravens coming to life in the second period which would send Post on their heels. Although unlike a day before, the Eagles' defense held their own during those furious attacks as Glasrud continued to shut down all the chances send her way. That would be until a shot thrown in front by freshman defenseman Alexandra Cistolo on the pass from sophomore forward McKenzie Rich would find the stick of sophomore forward Grace Schuck. Just to the right of Glasrud, Schuck would bury the opportunity to the right side of the goal mouth and put Franklin Pierce in business.
Early on in the third, Post would look to capitalize on a myriad of defensive zone turnovers by the Ravens in hopes of tying up the game, but Hertl would be there at every turn to make the save. Just under six minutes into the frame, junior forward
Hannah Luckman had a one-on-one scoring chance against Hertl and would look to go between her legs for the score but would be denied. It would be the start of six shots over the next 1:08 by Post that would either be turned away bu Hertl or blocked by her defense.
Eventually, senior forward Emilie Prive would extend the Raven lead to two goals with just over five minutes left in regulation after picking up the initial shot by senior forward Jenna Ruiz, who had three points in last night's game, and giving Franklin Pierce a 2-0 lead and the eventual win by that same score.
