HOW IT HAPPENED
The Eagles got off to a hot start, winning the first three face offs to command the puck before
Nathan McDevitt was the first to score, finding the back of the net just 5:49 into the game to grab the initial 1-0 edge. Despite being out-shot 13-8 in the next ten minutes, the Eagles grabbed an insurance goal as
Tommy Buis laced one past Saint Anselm's goalie thanks to a feed from
Parker Norling and
Patrick Murphy to make it 2-0. Post held their guests scoreless until just 11 ticks on the clock when Saint Anselm was able to get on the board, entering the second frame down by one (1-2).
In the second period, the Eagles got called for interference at 2:46 resulting in a two-minute penalty where the blue and white quickly took advantage of, knotting up the score at two-all on the power-play. 15 seconds after their penalty ended, the Eagles forced a power play of their own where they fired off a pair of shots but were unable to penetrate the net. It wasn't until the 8:01 mark when
Jake Aloi reclaimed the advantage for his squad with help from
Casey Sturgeon and
Connor McCowell (3-2). After the goal, the Eagles rattled off nine shots in a row before allowing the Hawks to get a shot off, keeping the score locked up at 3-2 heading into the final 20.
After the intermission, both teams were eager to score, trading shots before the Hawks found the back of the net to tie it up 3-3 with just over 11 minutes remaining in regulation. Post's Craig answered back with a powerful shot but was unable to find the net before the Hawks fired six shots until eventually taking the go-ahead goal as the clock struck 15:11 to take their first edge of the game, 4-3.
The Eagles attempted to get the goal back, winning the next two face offs before ripping two shots on net, however, the momentum from Saint Anselm was too strong as they added one more to their tally with an open net goal at the 18:44 mark to seal the 5-3 victory.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Each team only had a pair of penalties each, however, Saint Anselm was able to take advantage of both power-plays, scoring twice on their only man-up situations.
- Post's two penalties in today's game marks a season low since their game against Albertus Magnus in December of 2021 with one sole penalty.
