HOW IT HAPPENED
The Eagles wasted no time getting ahead, as back to back threes from
Maya Klein and Tijanae Simmons gave the orange and purple a six point edge before the visitors were able to get on the board thanks to a pair of free-throws. Simmons kept her streak from three-point land rolling with her second of the game just over three minutes into the game to catalyze a 14-point rally from the Eagles to bring the score to 20-2 with 4:38 remaining in the first. The Lightning were able to cut their deficit to 17 in the remaining minutes, heading into the second quarter, 11-28.
Exactly 60 seconds after the whistle, Simmons kept her squad rolling with a floating jumper before almost two minutes of scoreless action. It wasn't until 6:06 when
Dede Stevenson got the Eagles going again with a layup in the paint before the home team grabbed their biggest lead of the game, 46-18 with 1:31 to go, however, a Lightning free-throw brought the score to 46-19 at the end of the half. Heading into the break, the Eagles were shooting five-for11 from behind the arc, seven-for-nine from the charity stripe.
Goldey Beacom was able to come out of the half with a pair of layups to come within 23, but the Eagles immediately answered back, taking a 31-point lead thanks to a layup from
Naj White at the 4:26 mark. The Eagles continued to stay hot, heading into the final frame, 70-33.
Post continued their rally with a jumper from Lesandra Turner just 23 seconds into the fourth (72-33). It wasn't long before the Eagles took a 40-point lead (74-34) after just under a minute. After a six-point run topped off by a layup in the paint from
Amaya Santiago, the Eagles broke 80 points, more than doubling Goldey's tally. The Lighting were able to chip away, making it 40-80 before the Eagles went on another eight-point rally which was eventually broken up by a Lightning layup and free throw.
But the Eagles were determined to bring the hammer down as White landed a layup with 1:46 remaining followed by one from downtown to tie the current largest margin in Post Women's Basketball history (53). Goldey answered back with a point from the charity stripe before a jumper from White gave the home team the biggest lead in Eagle history (54) as the scoreboard read 98-44 with 37 ticks remaining on the clock. However, the visitors were able to sneak in a jumper with 20 seconds left to snatch the record from the Eagles before the purple and orange took home the dominant 98-46 CACC victory.
