Goehrig’s Gem Keeps Baseball’s Season Alive In Win Over Wilmington

Waterbury, CT – With the season on the line, Matt Goehrig put on a pitching performance for the ages as he pitched seven strong innings, while also hitting a home run in a 7-1 win for the Post University baseball team over Wilmington in an elimination game at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) tournament at Municipal Stadium on Thursday.

The win came on the heels of a 10-4 loss to Goldey-Beacom earlier in the day in the double-elimination tournament.

Goehrig pitched seven innings, giving up just one earned run on six hits while striking out a season-high nine batters in the win over the defending CACC Champions. It was his second win over Wilmington this season and the team's third.

Goehrig started out strong, striking out five batters in the first three innings, as the Eagles were able to score two runs in the bottom of the third. Michael Pavelchak led off the inning with a single followed by a double from Jimmy Brennan to put runners on second and third. DJ Caron followed with a two-run single, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

After blanking the Wildcats in the fourth and fifth, Goehrig helped out his own cause with a two-out solo home run, his 11th of the season as the Eagles took a 3-0 lead.

Goehrig retired the Wildcats in order in the top of the sixth – two via strikeout – and the Eagles piled on three more insurance runs in the bottom of the inning. With runners on first and second with two outs, Shane Lindemuth hit an RBI single to put the Eagles up, 4-0. A Michael Pavelchak sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third and Brennan followed with his second double of the game down the left field line, to scored Lindemuth and Evan Cornwell.

Wilmington scored one in the seventh, but Goehrig was able to strand runners on second and third.

Jacob Tamburrino came in to pitch two innings of relief, striking out three.

Pavelchak would add an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth for the final run for the Eagles.

Brennan was 2-for-5 with two RBI a run and two doubles. Pavelchak finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Caron drove in two runs. Keller was
2-for-4 with a run. Lindemuth was 1-for-1 with an RBI, two runs and a walk.

In the matchup of two top ten teams in the East Region in the first game of the day, the Eagles and Lightning were scoreless through the first two innings as Post starting pitcher Dan Raglievich struck out the side in the top of the second.

The Eagles broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third as Pavelchak and  Brennan got on base with a single and double, respectively, to start the inning and were driven in by Caron who hit a two-run single to make it a 2-0 game. The Eagles did load the bases with two outs, but a fielder's choice ended the inning.

Goldey-Beacom, who had just one hit through the first 4.1 innings, loaded the bases with back-to-back singles and a walk and were cleared on a Johnny Kampes three-run double to take a 3-2 lead. Kyle Walker followed with an RBI single to make it a 4-2 game.

The Lightning duplicated their efforts in the top of the sixth, scoring four more, including a two-run double from Braden Kolmansberger to take an 8-2 lead.

Post got two of those runs back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double from Evan Cornwell and an RBI single from Brennan to make it an 8-4 game, but stranded a runner on third.

The Lightning tacked on two more insurance runs in the eighth on RBI singles by Kolmansberger and Kampes.

Brennan finished the day 4-for-5 with a run and RBI. Pavelchak was 2-for-5 with a run. Cornwell was 2-for-4 with a run.

Raglievich struck out five and allowed four earned runs for the Eagles. Erik Gutowski pitched an inning of relief, striking out two.

Kolmansberger was 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs for the Lightning. Kampes went 3-for-4 with a run and four RBI.

Jake Kelchner started on the mound for Goldey-Beacom and pitched six innings, striking out seven. Kurt Schmidt pitched three innings of relief, striking out one and allowing just two hits, earning the save.

Up next, the Eagles will play at 2 p.m. on Friday in another elimination game against the loser of the Felician vs. Goldey-Beacom matchup, which begins at 11 a.m. at Municipal Stadium.
