Myrtle Beach, S.C. - The Post University baseball team scored two runs in the top of the eighth with two outs, lifting them to a 9-7 win over Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) on Sunday to conclude its weekend series at The Ripken Experience.
After the first two batters were retired in the top of the eighth inning,
Michael Pavelchak drew a walk to kickstart a rally. After Pavelchak stole second, the
Danny Gill tripled to left to score Pavelchak to put the Eagles up, 8-7. The Owls made a pitching change, bringing Peter Phillips in for Brett Fee.
Jimmy Brennan then greeted Phillips with an RBI single to score Gill, giving the Eagles a bit of insurance to lead 9-7.
Brennan Holligan struck out the side in the eighth and left a runner on first in the ninth to earn his first win of the season.
At the beginning of the game, the Owls jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning as Jack Drewery hiy a two-run single for them.
Post's bats woke up in the top of the third.
Evan Cornwell and
Shane Lindemuth both singled - with a fly out sandwiched in between - to put runners on first and second.
DJ Caron then put the Eagles on the board with an RBI double to score Cornwell. Consecutive RBI singles by Pavelchak, Gill and Brennan made it a 4-3 game. An RBI groundout from Olah and a wild pitch that scored Brennan gave the Eagles the 6-3 lead.Â
Matt Goehrig homered with one out in the top of the sixth to give the Eagles a 7-3 lead, but the Owls answered with four in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a two-run single from Mike Ferrett. A Connor Goggin single tied the game at 7-7.
Gill finished the game going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Brennan was 2-for-5 with a run and two RBI. Pavelchak was 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.Â
Holligan pitched 2.1 innings with three strikeouts.
Nico Gaudio starterd the game for the Eagles, pitching 4.1 innings with three strikeouts.
Post finished its Myrtle Beach trip 3-1 and are now 6-5 on the season. The Owls move to 4-2.
Up next, the Eagles will head to North Carolina to take on Franklin Pierce for a four-game series between March 3-5.
