Bridgewater, Mass. - The Post University women's hockey season came to a tough end, losing to Stonehill 4-3 in double overtime on Saturday afternoon as the Skyhawks swept the first round of the New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) Championship.
Post finishes it season 4-29-2 while Stonehill improved to 19-15-2.
Post scored just 14 seconds into the game as
Julia Wysocki, rebounding a shot from
Jenna Abeyta and stuffing it in to give Post a 1-0 lead. It was Wysocki's second goal of the series.
The Eagles would hold that lead into the third behind the goaltending of
Grace Glasrud who stopped 21 of her 40 shots during the first two periods.
Stonehill finally did breakthrough on the scoreboard just 1:55 into the third on a power play goal from Bailey Feeney.
But the Eagles would score two straight goals. The first from
Sheridan Terrazzano as she took an airborne pass from
Kiersten Browning right to her stick and waited til she skated to the net to fire a shot past Stonehill goaltender, Hanna Zukow to put Post up, 2-1 at the 3:20 mark.
Just 2:20 later, Abeyta scored her fifth goal of the season as she stole a Skyhawks pass in the offensive zone and fired a shot past Zujow to put the Eagles up, 3-1 at the 5:40 mark.
The Skyhawks scored on another power play on a goal from Alexis Petford in a shot from the faceoff circle.
Post was close to closing out the game, but the Skyhawks got on a two-on-one break and Gracie Sacca found Katie Sonntag to tie the game at 3-3 at 17:13
The teams went into overtime and Glasrud stopped eight in the frame and Stonehill's Eve Stone stopped five, forcing a second overtime.
However, at 3:23 in the second overtime, Paige Whaley took a pass from Petford, took an initial shot that was stopped by a sprawling Glasrud. But the rebound went back to Whaley who backhanded the puck in to give Stonehill the win.
The Eagles finished with 21 shots on goal with Terrazzano, Abeyta,
Rylee Patfield and
Caisey Van Den Oetelaar leading the way with three.
