Wilmington, De. - The Post University women's basketball team continued their hot play with more suffocating defense, defeating Wilmington, 58-33 on Saturday afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play.
It is the third time this season the Eagles have held an opponent under 40 points in a game as Post held Wilmington to just a 22.6 percent shooting performance as the Wildcats went 12-for-53 from the field.
The Eagles also clinched a first-round CACC home playoff game as they are now 16-9 overall and 11-4 in the CACCÂ and have won seven of their last ten games. Wilmington is now 2-22 overall and 1-13 in the CACC.
Tyree Allen got the scoring started to open up the game, hitting a three to put the Eagles up early. After the Eagles briefly fell behind 8-6, they would score the next eight points, including a three from Sha'Raya Haines a transition jumper off a steal from
Rebecca Fraley and three points from
Taina Pagan. The Eagles would go into the second quarter leading 19-14. Six different players scored in the first quarter, including all five starters.Â
Post's defense clamped down in the second quarter, holding the Wildcats to just four points on 1-for-11 shooting as the Eagles forced seven turnovers in the frame. Haines scored seven of the Eagles' 12 points in the quarter on 3-for-5 shooting, taking them into the half leading 31-18.
The third quarter saw the Eagles increase their lead once again, and holding Wilmington to 2-for-11 shooting, and Haines once again sparked the offense scoring eight more points, while Pagan went 3-for-3 from the field for six points as Post went into the fourth leading 49-29.
Wilmington had the same shooting performance in the fourth as they did in the third, as the Eagles allowed just five field goals in the final three quarters and never threatened the Eagles.
Post forced 27 turnovers, their second most this season.
Haines finished with 18 points. Pagan had 13 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
Kiara Eubanks had eight points, five steals and five rebounds. Off the bench,
Roxkel Washington had four points and seven rebounds to go along with two steals.
TiJanae Simmons had three steals in 11 minutes.
Emani Lucas-Davis led Wilmington with ten points and ten rebounds.
