WATERBURY, Conn. -- An unprecedented start for Post University Men's Basketball has put them on the national radar now for the first time in program history on Tuesday. After defeating three teams who qualified for the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Tournament so far this season, getting off to a program-best 5-0 start, and sitting at 7-1 heading into the weekend against another NCAA qualifying team from a year ago in Bentley University, the Eagles added another feather into their cap.
In the D2CSC East Region Poll yesterday, Post was tabbed second behind only three-week leader St. Thomas Aquinas who sits at 10-1 with their one loss being to the Eagles, 109-107 in overtime, at the start of the season. That ranking was the highest Post has been in program history and then 24 hours later they made history again being ranked 23rd nationally in the D2CSC National Poll. While Post has received votes in the D2CSC National Poll, this is the first time in which they have actually cracked into the top 25.Â
In their young season, the up-and-coming Eagles got off to a 5-0 start before suffering their first loss at the hands of Southern New Hampshire University, a tournament team from a season ago, at home by a final score of 82-76. That 5-0 start included victories over New Haven, Saint Rose, AIC, St. Thomas Aquinas, and Mercy to help Post slowly climb the East Region rankings.Â
Adding on another win against tourney team, Dominican (N.Y.) just over a week ago to open conference play, 79-77, and then a hard-fought win on Sunday against Assumption, 75-70, and the Eagles sit on the cusp of tying their best start since the 2012-13 season in which they started 8-1 after an 0-1 start before rattling off eight straight victories.Â
Currently, with only one Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game under their belt, Post has a long way to go with their season which includes five more games against NCAA Tournament teams in Bentley, St. Anselm, Caldwell (twice), and a road matchup against Dominican (N.Y.). As it stands, Post and Dominican (N.Y.) hold the best overall record in the CACC, both possessing a 7-1 record with the Eagles holding the head-to-head tiebreaker currently due to their victory over them last week.Â
Post will await the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Poll set the be released tomorrow to see if they will make history again by being nationally ranked in that top 25 list. The Eagles were receiving votes in last week's poll.
