Women's Tennis Edged Out By Wilmington on the Road

WILMINGTON, Del. -- It was the closest match Post University Women's Tennis has had against the defending Central Atlantic Conference Champion Wilmington University since they defeated them back in 2019 at home as the Eagles, who lost 6-1 earlier this year at home against the Wildcats, snagged two more matches on Wednesday, falling by a final score of 4-3.

The Eagles are still trying to wrap up the final spot in the CACC Tournament as they are tied in the loss column with Dominican (N.Y.) with five losses each. While Goldey-Beacom cannot reach the fourth and final seed, the Lady Chargers still can if they win out and Post were to lose out. A loss by Dominican (N.Y.) on Thursday against Jefferson would bring the Eagles on the brink of clinching that spot.

HOW IT HAPPENED
It was a doubles sweep for the Wildcats as they took all three matches with relative ease. Sophomore Alva Norberg and junior Marley Truifunovic took down graduate student Julia D'Occhio and senior Ocean Mallevre, 6-0, handing the duo their first #3 Doubles loss of the year together. Junior Megan Lombardt and sophomore Natalia Gonzalez Ramos were the next to fall as juniors Fenna Swaan and Kushi Khandoji took care of business against them, 6-2, in the #1 Doubles.

In the closest doubles match of the afternoon, the #2 Doubles, it would be graduate student Annunciata De-Souza and sophomore Micaela Rosignuolo falling, 6-3, against seniors Larize Nel and Jess Purdy in their first time teaming up with each other.

Wilmington would wrap things up with three singles wins as Khandoji swept through Lombardt in the #2 Singles, 6-1 and 6-2 while Trifunovic took down Mallevre in the #4 Singles, 6-2 and 6-0. The final singles match that the Wildcats needed would come from Swaan against Gonzalez Ramos in the #6 Singles in which the junior won set one 6-2 before squeaking by in the second set tiebreaker, 7-6 after a 7-5 tiebreaker point win.

Getting three singles wins of their own, the #1 Singles was owned by De-Souza who remained undefeated in singles play with her 6-1 and 6-3 set wins over graduate Valentina Ivankovic. Junior Nina Langenfeld dropped set one of the #5 Singles against Nel before forcing a tiebreaker at six all in set two. During the tiebreaker, Nel would have issues with her ankle forcing her to eventually retire from the match, giving Langenfeld the victory.

In the final Eagle win of the day, a thrilling three-set victory for Rosignuolo in the #3 Singles saw her drop set one, 6-4, before coming back with a 7-6 tiebreaker win by a 7-4 final in set two, and then capping off the come back with an 11-9 victory in the 10-point tiebreaker during set three as Post ended the afternoon on a high note despite the 4-3 loss.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • For the first time this season, Julia D'Occhio and Oceane Mallevre fell in the #3 Doubles matchup, they are still 3-1 overall on the year as a duo
  • Nina Langenfeld has now won four consecutive singles matches after losing her previous three
  • Annunciata De-Souza remains a perfect 7-0 in conference singles matches with her #1 Singles victory today
  • Post University has lost five straight matches against Wilmington (Del.), but their 4-3 loss on Wednesday was the closest loss during their losing streak
