Waterbury, Conn. – Sha'Raya Haines and
Jaeonna Sutton combined to hit ten of the Post University women's basketball team's 15 threes as the Eagles defeated Nyack, 79-60 on Tuesday evening at the Drubner Center in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game.
The 15 three-pointers were a season-high for the Eagles.
After a competitive first half that saw the Eagles lead by just two points at 33-31,
Makayla Thompson scored the first five points of the second half to give the Eagles a 38-31 lead. The
Warriors got back to within five at 40-35, but the Eagles hit three consecutive threes as part of a 13-2 run as
Kyla Ramseur,
Kiera Fernandes and Haines hit deep shots during the run.
The Warriors crept back to within nine at 53-44 with 1:45 left until Sutton came off the bench and promptly hit three consecutive three-pointers to give the Eagles (12-4, 6-2 CACC) a commanding lead at 62-45 heading into the fourth. The Eagles hit seven threes in the third quarter, outscoring the Warriors, 29-14.
Nyack (5-8, 4-4 CACC) never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way, as Haines scored nine points, including two threes in the final frame.
The first quarter saw the Eagles go up by as much as 11 points, using a 9-0 run over a 2:33 span, including threes from Haines and Sutton to give the Eagles a 22-11 lead at the 1:44 mark. Post would lead 23-15 at the end of the first.
Nyack rallied in the second quarter, cutting the Post lead to 30-29 after two free throws from Mariah Witts with 1:18 left, but a three by Fernandes put the Eagles back up by four points before going into the half with a two-point lead.
Haines finished with a team-high 23 points and ten rebounds for her third double-double of the season. She is now just two points shy of 1,000 points in her career.
Sutton finished with 16 points on 6-for-10 shooting. Thompson fell just three points shy of a triple double with seven points, ten rebounds and ten assists.
Tai Pagan led the Eagles with 12 rebounds to go with eight points.
Amani Levitan led Nyack with 21 points.
Post outrebounded the Warriors, 44-30 and the Eagles bench outscored Nyack, 28-8 behind Sutton and Fernandes.
