Manchester, N.H. – The Post University men's basketball team scored the final nine points holding off a threat from Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) in a 71-61 win over the Penmen on Saturday afternoon.
The win is the second straight for the Eagles, who are now 5-5 on the season. The Penmen are now 4-6.
The game was a rematch of a Nov. 13 game, where the Penmen won by a point.
After the Eagles led by as much as 13 points in the second half at 55-42, the Penmen stormed back with a 19-7 run over five minutes to cut Post's lead to 62-61 with 4:03 remaining.
From there, the Eagles did not allow a single point the rest of the way, scoring the last nine points of the game, beginning with a three from
Tyler Small with 3:10 left. Small would make a jumper with 49 seconds. On the ensuing possession,
Isaiah Holmes stole the ball and made a layup, effectively putting the game away. He would add two more free throws with 22 seconds remaining.
After a close first half where the Eagles held a small 35-34 lead, Post went on a 20-8 run to begin the second half as
D.J. Frechette scored six points and
Harrison Warnock five during the run. Six different Eagles scored during that time.
In the first half, the team exchanged leads three times, with no one able to take a big lead until the Eagles turned a 23-23 tie with 5:11 remaining to a 32-23 lead.
Collins Onyeike started the run with a jumper. The Eagles would then steal the ball on back-to-back possessions, with
David Jasson making a layup off his steal, followed by a theft from Holmes that led to a three from Frechette. Holmes capped the run with a jumper of his own.
Holmes hit one more three the rest of the half for Post and the Penmen scored the final five points as the Eagles took the one-point lead into the break.
Frechette finished with a team-high 18 points, including 4-for-7 from three. Holmes had 15, while Small had 14. Warnock had nine points, five rebounds and four assists.
Abdul-Basit Ajia scored six points, had a game-high seven rebounds to go with four steals.
It was also the first win for the Eagles over SNHU in ten opportunities.
The Eagles turned the ball over just seven times, a season-low.
Holmes has scored in double-figures in nine of ten games this season. Onyeike had two blocks on the day. He has had four games this season with multiple blocks, including three three-block games.
Matt Brecht scored a team-high 17 points for SNHU.
Up next, the Eagles travel to Florida to take on Florida Southern on Dec. 17 and Barry University on Dec. 18.
