Women’s Volleyball Falls Just Short In Five-Set Thriller Against Jefferson In CACC Quarterfinals

Philadelphia, Pa. – The Post University women's volleyball team almost pulled an upset for the ages, but lost in five sets to Thomas Jefferson University, 3-2 (19-25, 25-16, 25-14, 20-25, 15-11) on Tuesday evening in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) quarterfinals.

The Eagles seeded fourth in the North Division gave everything to the top seed in the South and no. 6 team in the East Region Rams.

Post jumped out of the gates taking a 6-4 lead as Aniya Goodman had two kills and an ace during the opening run. With the teams tied at 12-12, the Eagles rattled off a 9-2 run, including five straight to take a commanding 21-14 lead. Four different Eagles had a kill in the 5-0 run as Datari Mathis, Madelynn Boop, Izabella Rae and Colleen Romero each had a kill to go with an ace by Rae. Post did not let the Rams back in it, taking a 1-0 match lead.

The Rams rebounded with a 25-16 win in set two, going on runs of 5-0 and 7-0 during the frame. The third set was similar to the second, jumping out to leads of 11-4, and 15-6 and leading by as much as 13 points in the set to eventually go up, 2-1.

Post rebounded in the fourth set taking a 10-5 lead after scoring five straight points as Boop had two kills, and Lemmon and Romero had one. Jefferson crept back tying the game at 15-15, but a Post 6-1 run, with kills by Mathis and Santos and aces by Goodman and Rae put the Eagles up 21-16. After Jefferson scored the next two, the Eagles scored the next three thanks to a kill and ace by Soto. The set ended on an attack error by the Rams, tying the match, 2-2.

In the fifth and final set, Post went up, 5-2, scoring four straight as Soto and Mathis had a kill and Goodman had an ace. However, with the teams knotted up at 9-9, the Rams scored the next five to make it a 14-9 game. Post rallied with two straight points, but the Rams won the match with a kill from Molen.

Boop led the Eagles with ten kills. Soto and Mathis had nine kills. Maria Fernanda Branco had 17 assists to lead Post. Izabella
Rae had a team-high four kills and 11 assists. Alyssa Groves had 28 digs. Lemmon had five blocks.

Morgan Ritchie led Jefferson with 18 kills. Molen had 16. Kristine Guenther had 36 assists.

The Eagles finish their season 10-20.
