Waterbury, CT – The Post University women's basketball team started its defense of the Central Atlantic Collegiate College (CACC) North Division title with a resounding 80-59 win over the University of Bridgeport in its conference opener.
With the win, the Eagles move to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the CACC. Bridgeport falls to 3-4 and 0-1, respectively.
Jamie Waldron led all Eagles in scoring with 18 points to go with seven rebounds.
Tyree Allen scored 16 off the bench and
Kiara Eubanks had 15 points and four assists.
The Eagles never trailed in the first quarter, jumping out to a 17-13 lead, thanks in large part to forcing the Purple Knights into seven turnovers, which translated into eight points. Waldron scored six of her points in the first quarter.
Bridgeport took a brief 19-17 lead after scoring the first six points of the second quarter, but a layup from
Tyara McQueen and a three from
Tijane Simmons put the Eagles back up 22-19 with just over six minutes remaining before halftime. Eubanks and Allen combined to score the final 13 points of the quarter as Post shot 10-for-18 from the field in the quarter to take a 39-29 lead into the half.
Post doubled its lead after the third quarter, forcing seven more turnovers by the Purple Knights and outrebounding them 13-7. Waldron went 4-for-5 from the field in the quarter, including a jumper with 23 seconds left to give Post a 59-39 lead into the fourth.
Post never led by less than 14 the rest of the way as Bridgeport never threatened in the fourth. McQueen scored six points in the final quarter.
The Eagles forced 18 turnovers – a season-high for the defense - on the day, leading to 25 points, and dominated in the paint scoring, 58-42. Post had 42 rebounds on the day, with Waldron,
Roxkel Washington and
Saule Kaupyte all tied for the lead with seven.
The 34 field goals made on the day were a season-high for Post, as was their 51.5 shooting percentage. The Eagles have now won their last two games against Bridgeport.
McQueen finished with eight points and four steals. Washington had three blocks on the evening.
Stephanie McBride led all Purple Knights with 18 points and five rebounds.
Up next, the Eagles get their first CACC road test, as they travel to Dominican University to take on the Chargers on Saturday, December 3 at 1 p.m.
