Fairbanks, AK – The Post University women's basketball team stayed hot in the ice-cold tundra of Alaska as the Eagles defeated the University of Alaska-Fairbanks, 82-69 on Friday evening in the North Star Invitational.
It's the fourth straight win for the Eagles, who move to 5-1 on the season.
Jamie Waldron led three players in double figures with a career-high 20 points to go with seven rebounds. Tyara McQueen had 19 points off the bench with six assists, while Kiara Eubanks had 14 points and seven rebounds.
The lead changed hands eight times in the first quarter with the Eagles taking a 23-22 lead after the first ten minutes as Tijane Simmons hit a jumper with three seconds left. The layup capped a small 6-0 run from the Eagles to close out the quarter. McQueen hit two three-pointers in the quarter.
The Eagles put some distance between themselves and the Nanooks (0-4) in the second quarter, closing out the quarter on a 14-2 run over the final 5:30 of the half as Waldron scored six of her points during the run, which was capped by a layup from Eubanks in the final seconds to put Post up, 46-33. The Eagles held the Nanooks to just 26.32 percent from the field on 5-for-19 shooting in the second quarter, while the Eagles shot 56.25 percent (9-for-16).
Post led by as much as 15 points in the third at 52-37 before the Nanooks closed the gap to 52-44, but three-pointers from Waldron and Murphy gave the Eagles a double-digit lead back heading into the fourth up 64-53.
The Eagles never led by less than eight the rest of the way, hitting all seven of their free throw attempts in the fourth, while holding the Nanooks to 33.3 percent shooting in the final frame.
The Eagles outrebounded the Nanooks, 36-27, including 16 offensive rebounds that led to 16 second chance points.
Lauren Murphy finished with eight points and four rebounds.
Roxkel Washington led the Eagles with nine rebounds.
Post's 82 points were a season high. The Eagles also had a season-high in steals with 11 as Simmons and Eubanks each had three.
Destiny Reimers led Alaska-Fairbanks with 22 points on 9-for-13 shooting. Ellen Silva had 16.
Post continues its trip to Alaska, taking on Montana State University-Billings on Saturday at 9 p.m.
