Garden City, N.Y. – The Post University women's basketball team opened up the 2022-23 season the same way they opened up the previous season, with a win over Adelphi, 59-49 on Friday evening.
Tijanae Simmons led the Eagles with a team-high 22 points on 7-for-14 shooting, including 6-for-9 from three and grabbed eight rebounds.
Tyree Allen had a double-double with 14 points and ten rebounds, going 12-for-14 from the free throw line.
After falling behind 9-1 early on, the Eagles responded with a 10-0 run of their own, the last six points coming on back-to-back three pointers from Simmons. The Eagles took a 15-12 lead after the first, holding Adelphi scoreless the final 2:50 of the quarter.
The Panthers took a brief 16-15 lead in the second quarter, but another three from Simmons gave the Eagles the lead back, one they wouldn't relinquish in the half, taking a 28-23 lead into the break. Allen made two free throws with no time on the clock to give the Eagles the five-point lead. Once again, the Eagles closed out the quarter shutting the Panthers down, not allowing a point in the final 2:33 of the half.
The Panthers took a 39-37 lead after the third quarter as the Eagles, finishing the final 6:53 on a 10-4 run. Both teams were scoreless the final 2:13 of the quarter.
The Eagles took the lead back for good at the 6:10 mark in the fourth quarter as Simmons hit another three, followed by a jumper from
Kiara Eubanks to give Post the 48-43 lead. The Eagles went 10-for-14 from the fret throw line in the final quarter to put the game away.
This is the second straight year the Eagles opened its season with a win over Adelphi. Post won 57-46 to open up the 2021-2022 season.
Post was a force on the boards, outrebounding the Panthers 54-34 with Eubanks and Allen leading the way with ten. Eubanks had seven points, as well.
Tyara McQueen had six points, six assists and seven rebounds.
Roxkel Washington did damage on the defensive end with four steals and four blocks to go with her seven rebounds.
The Eagles' bench, led by Allen outscored the Panthers, 24-2. Post also had 16 second-chance points to Adelphi's one.
