Baseball Makes Late Inning Comeback, But Fall In Bottom Of The Ninth To Caldwell In CACC Quarterfinals

Caldwell, N.J. – The Post University baseball team made an unbelievable comeback to take the lead in the top of the ninth, but gave up two runs in the bottom of the inning and lost to Caldwell, 12-11 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) quarterfinals on Monday afternoon.

Post scored nine runs – a season-high in an inning – after being behind 10-2 entering the top of the ninth.

The Eagles scored the first three runs of the inning without even registering a hit. Robert Olah walked, followed by Evan Wilkinson being hit by a pitch and three straight walks to Bryon Carr, Devon Ogston and Rian Balbino to make it a 10-4 game. A fielder's choice courtesy of Brycin Hernandez made it a 10-5 game.

With the Eagles down to their final out, Harry Allegra and Jared Zima hit back-to-back RBI singles to score Ogston and Hernandez, respectively to make it a 10-7 game.

The Eagles batted around and Olah would reach on an error to load the bases for Wilkinson who smacked a ground-rule double to make it a 10-9 game.

Caldwell countered with a pitching change, but the Eagles countered with a change of their own, as Eric Galarza pinch hit. It was the right move as Galarza doubled to score Wilkinson and Olah to give the Eagles the 11-10 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Eagles had Caldwell down to its final out with runners on first and second. However, Luis Rullan stole third and scored as the ball went into the outfield to tie the game. After a hit by pitch, Jack Zosulis drove in the game-winning run to give the Cougars the win.

Post got on the board early in the game in the first inning as a bases loaded hit by pitch by Allegra scored the first run, followed by an RBI single from Olah gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

Caldwell scored two in the bottom of the inning, two more in the third and sixth and opened up the game in the bottom of the eighth with four runs.

Zima finished the game for the Eagles 2-for-5 with a run and RBI. Wilkinson finished 1-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Ogston scored two runs for the Eagles and Allegra drove in two runs and scored one.

Chas Cywin struck out five in 5.1 innings for the Eagles.

Tavis Brunson was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs for Caldwell. Rullan was 5-for-6 with two RBI and three runs.
