Waterbury, Conn. – Chas Cywin struck out 11 batters in just 5.2 innings, as the Post University baseball team won its first game of the season in a 5-0 victory over Dominican in the second game of a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader. The Chargers won the first game, 17-4.
Cywin's 11 strikeouts were a career-high, surpassing his previous high of eight in a game against Saint Rose last season.
The Eagles were threatened in the top of the third as the Chargers loaded the bases via walk, single and a hit by pitch, but Cywin struck out the final two batters of the inning to get out of the jam.
The Post hitters gave the Eagles enough offense to support Cywin, scoring two times in the first as Harry Allegra drove in Devon Ogston with a single to take a 1-0 lead. A fielder's choice by Jared Zima scored Brycin Hernandez, who walked in the inning.
The Eagles (1-8) added on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth, scoring on an error, an RBI groundout from Brycin Hernandez and an RBI double from Allegra that scored Evan Mazako.
Allegra finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Cywin's 11 strikeouts were the most by an Eagles pitcher in a game since Enzo Esposito struck out 16 in a game against Jefferson in 2018.
In game one, Allegra went 2-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Eagles offensively.
However, the Chargers (9-5) scored three runs in the second, two in the third and opened up the game with eight runs in the fourth to take control of the game.
Shane Hewlette led the way for the Chargers, going 2-for-3 with three home runs and four RBI.
Up next, the Eagles will go on the road to take on Caldwell in a CACC game beginning at 3 p.m.
