Women’s Basketball Uses Big Third Quarter To Beat AIC

Springfield, Mass. – The Post University women's basketball team closed out 2021 with a 72-68 win over American International College (AIC) in a road non-conference game on Thursday afternoon.

With the win, the Eagles are now 8-2 on the season and have won seven of their last eight games.

Kyla Ramseur led the way with 21 points for the Eagles, her sixth straight game of 20 or more points. She went 5-for-9 from three-point range. Tai Pagan had her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds, going 6-for-9 from the field.

Heading into the third quarter, the Eagles trailed 35-29 before kicking off the half with a 16-5 run over the first 3:41 of the third quarter. Ramseur hit two threes during the run to go along with baskets by Jaeonna Sutton, Sha'Raya Haines and Pagan. Pagan grabbed three rebounds during the run as well.

The Eagles led by as much as eight at the 2:50 mark after a layup from Haines to make it a 51-43 game. They'd lead 53-49 heading to the fourth.

After AIC (5-4) made a free throw to start the fourth quarter, the Eagles scored nine of the next 11 points taking a 63-32 lead – their largest of the game – at the 4:56 mark of the fourth with Pagan leading the way with five points. The Yellow Jackets trimmed the Post lead back down to three points at 67-64 with 30 seconds left, but the Eagles hit five of their final six free throws down the stretch to hold on.

The Yellow Jackets scored the first five points of the game before the Eagles got on the board with a jumper from Makayla Thompson. The teams would tie three different times in the quarter but the Eagles were unable to take the lead as AIC took a 16-11 lead after the first quarter as Destine Perry hit a three-pointer at the buzzer for AIC.

Post took its only lead of the first half at the 3:17 mark after a three from Ramseur to make it a 29-28 game before the Yellow Jackets scored the final six points before halftime.

Amaya Santiago scored 12 points for the Eagles to go along with eight rebounds. Haines finished with 12 points and five rebounds, while Thompson had seven points and three assists. The Eagles dominated on the board, outrebounding the Yellow Jackets, 50-32, with 24 of them on the offensive end, their second-highest total of the season.

The 8-2 start matches the best start in program history after ten games, matching the 2019-2020 team.

Perry led AIC with 18 points, Zoe Willis had 16 points and eight rebounds.

The Eagles return to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play to kick off 2022 as they host Holy Family at 1 p.m. on January 2nd.
