Waterbury, Conn. – Sophomore Sha'Raya Haines scored 15 points and freshman Tai Pagan grabbed 16 rebounds as the Post University women's basketball team won its first ever Central Athletic Collegiate Conference (CACC) tournament game, a 51-37 victory over Chestnut Hill in the quarterfinals.
With the win, the Eagles will meet Holy Family in the semifinals on the campus of the University of the Sciences on March 7 at 2 p.m.
After a tough shooting first quarter for both team, the Eagles were able to open up a lead in the second quarter Post started on an 11-0 run to take a 21-8 lead at the 5:38 mark. Juniors Angelica Flores and Hannah Benac each hit a three during the run.
The Griffins closed the gap to 22-16 after a three from Lauren Crim, but Benac would score the last five points – including another three - for the Eagles, giving them a 27-18 lead at halftime.
Post widened its lead in the third behind the shooting of Haines and Flores who each scored seven points in the quarter. The Eagles did not allow another point to Chestnut Hill in the final 5:11 of the quarter, finishing on a 9-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from Flores to give the Eagles a 45-26 lead heading into the fourth.
Chestnut Hill got as close as 11 points at the 3:05 mark in the fourth, but the Eagles hit six of their final seven free-throws down the stretch to hold onto the win.
Benac finished with 12 points and five rebounds. Flores scored 13 points.
Led by Pagan, the Eagles outrebounded Chestnut Hill, 45-26, including 16 offensive rebounds.
Crim led all Griffins in scoring with 11 points
The Eagles are now 22-5 on the season, increasing its all-time season record for wins.
