Haines Catches Fire From Deep As Women’s Basketball Wins Fifth Straight

Waterbury, Conn. – Sophomore Sha'Raya Haines scored 21 points and the Post University women's basketball team took control early and won its fifth straight game, a 75-51 victory over Caldwell in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game on Tuesday evening at the Drubner Center.

Post is now 16-4 overall and 11-2 in the CACC. The 16 wins is a program-high for the team. The Eagles also remained undefeated at home at 9-0.

Haines went 5-for-11 from three, including 3-for-3 in the first quarter. After the Eagles briefly fell behind 5-4, junior Taylor Williams hit a three-pointer as part of a 10-0 run to give the Eagles the 14-5 lead. Caldwell cut the Post lead to 14-9 before Haines hit back to back threes to take a 20-9 lead. Post scored the final 12 points in the quarter to take a 26-9 lead after the first.

Post extended its lead to 21 points at 32-11 early in the second, and took a 37-21 lead heading into the half.

A 12-2 run to begin the third quarter was highlighted by two threes from junior Hannah Benac as the Eagles took a 49-23 lead at the 7:46 mark. With the Eagles leading 55-29 at the 3:05 mark, the Cougars scored the final nine points and the Eagles took a 55-38 lead heading into the fourth. Freshman Tai Pagan scored six of her 18 points in the quarter, going 3-for-3 from the field.

In the fourth, a three from Haines and a layup from Benac off a steal and assist from Haines put the Eagles back up 60-38. The Cougars would cut it under 20 one more time after a layup from Rebecca Morrison to make it a 60-42 game, but a layup from Pagan and a three from Benac put the Eagles back up by 23 at 65-42 and the Eagles would never lead by less than 21 points the rest of the way.

Pagan finished the day 8-for-10 from the field. Benac finished with 11 points and five rebounds and Haines added six rebounds and six assists to her night. Freshman Jimmirah Johnson had 12 rebounds, eight of them on the offensive side.

Post outrebounded Caldwell, 52-31 and Post's 21 offensive rebounds led to 16 second chance points. The Eagles scored 19 points off of Caldwell's 15 turnovers.

Morrison led all Cougars (5-17, 5-8 CACC) in scoring with 20 points. Halle Brown chipped in with 12 points.

Up next, the Eagles play at home against Jefferson at 1 p.m. in a CACC tilt.
