Nyack, N.Y. – The Post University women's basketball lead held a big early lead, and held on in overtime to defeat Nyack in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Taylor Williams led all Eagles in scoring with 17 points and seven rebounds.
The Eagles led by as much as 23 points, at 30-7 in the second quarter before the Warriors rallied to send the game into overtime.
Post and Nyack went into overtime tied at 60-60 and the teams would keep it a one or two-point game over the first 3:44 until junior Hannah Benac hit a big time three on an assist from sophomore Sha'Raya Haines to give the Eagles the 70-67 lead. Nyack responded with a layup from Jasmine Cruse to make it a one-point game at 70-69. Cruse would then foul junior Williams who sank two free throws to put the Eagles back up, 72-69.
After Nyack's Jocelin Wright, went 1-for-2 from the line to make it a 72-70 game, Williams hit two more important free throws with 17 seconds left, putting the Eagles up 74-70. The free throws loomed large as Nyack's Yamalis Villegas hit a three, making it a 74-73 game. Junior Angelica Flores then sank one of her two free throws and Nyack was unable to score at the end, giving the Eagles the win.
It was the fourth straight win for the Eagles, the fourth time they have won four or more games in a row this season. They sit at 20-5 overall and 15-3 in the CACC, and have already clinched the North Division title.
The game went into overtime after Nyack went on a 21-9 run over the final 7:54 of the fourth, as Cruse scored 13 points on 4-for-4 shooting and 5-for-5 from the free-throw line to rally the Warriors.
Post led 18-6 after the end of the first, thanks to two threes from Haines at the end of the period.
A 12-1 run to open the second gave the Eagles their biggest lead of the game as Flores and sophomore Katelyn Andres both hit back-to-back threes. Nyack closed the deficit to 36-18 before halftime as Jenissa Encarnacion scored the last four points for Post.
Nyack opened the third with a 13-5 run to cut the Post lead to 41-31 before Flores and Andres hit consecutive threes again to put the Eagles up, 47-31. Post led 49-37 heading into the fourth.
Haines finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Senior Taylor Ceballos had ten points on 4-for-5 shooting. Flores and Andres each finished with 12 points and combined to go 5-for-12 from three.
Cruse led all Warriors in scoring with 28 points. Wright had ten points and 12 rebounds.
The Eagles will conclude their regular season on February 29 when they host Concordia at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
