Lakewood, N.J.– For the first time in program history, the Post University women's basketball team clinched the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division regular season title with a 65-58 win over Georgian Court on the road on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Sha'Raya Haines led the way for the Eagles with 23 points, six rebounds and five assists as the Eagles built an early 17-point lead after the first quarter and held off a rally by the Lions in the second half.
The Eagles are now 18-5 overall and 13-3 in the CACC with three games remaining.
Post caught fire in the first quarter, jumping out to a 20-4 run to begin the game as juniors Taylor Williams, Hannah Benac and Angelica Flores all hit a three during the opening run. Flores – whose three-pointer capped the run – scored nine of the first 20 points for the Eagles. Post would lead 26-9 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Eagles extended their lead to 31-11 after Haines scored five straight points – including a three – to get the scoring going for Post.
The Lions (7-15, 5-10 CACC) responded with a 17-6 run over the final 7:50 of the quarter as Jada Atchison and Tian Addison each scored five points during the run for the Lions to close the gap. The Eagles held a 37-28 lead at the halftime break.
Georgian Court kept the momentum going early in the third, cutting the Eagles lead to 39-35 after a layup from Addison at the 7:43 mark before a 7-0 run – five of the points coming from Flores – put the Eagles back up 46-35 at the 4:46 mark. It would be the last bucket the Eagles would score in the third, as the Lions closed out with a 9-0 run. Post held a slim 46-44 lead heading into the fourth.
The Eagles gave themselves some breathing room to open the fourth, starting out with a 9-1 run to begin the period to take a 55-45 lead at the 6:30 mark. Over the course of the next 5:36, the Lions cut into the lead, and made it a one-possession game with 54 seconds left after a three from Savawn Hughes made it a 59-56 Post advantage. However, Williams and Haines would the final six points of the game – four on free throws – to hold on to the win.
Flores finished with 16 points on 6-for-8 shooting. Williams had ten points and nine rebounds. Freshman Tai Pagan had eight points and nine rebounds and Benac had eight points and eight rebounds.
Atchison had 11 points for the Lions. Safiyyah Lee had 12 points and six rebounds and four assists.
The Eagles will host Felician on February 18 in the team's Mental Health Awareness game at 5:30 p.m. at the Drubner Center.
