Philadelphia, Pa. – Sophomore Sha'Raya Haines scored a team-high 21 points, but the Post University women's basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped in a heartbreaking 64-63 loss to Holy Family in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game on Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles now sit at 8-3 for the season and 3-1 in the CACC.
Post led by as much as nine points as it turned a 30-24 halftime deficit to a nine-point lead after the third quarter.
After the Tigers hit a three to open up the third, the Eagles rattled off the next 11 points, capped by a three-pointer from freshman Kiera Fernandes. It gave the Eagles a 35-33 lead at the eight-minute mark.
The two teams would split the next four baskets before Haines scored the next five points for the Eagles to give Post the 42-37 lead at the 5:06 mark. Holy Family cut the score to 42-41 followed by a 7-0 run from the Eagles as a three from junior Taylor Williams and four free-throws from sophomore Katelyn Andres put the Eagles up 49-41 at the 2:42 mark. Williams would hit one more three in the quarter as the Eagles took the 54-45 lead going into the fourth.
Post went up by as much as 11 in the fourth as a layup from Fernandes gave Post the 56-45 lead at the 8:10 mark. However, the Tigers went on a 13-2 run ending on a three from Holy Family's Mia Ehling to make it a 58-58 game. Haines scored the next five points for the Eagles to put the Eagles back up by five at 63-58.
Holy Family would score on baskets from Elizabeth Radley and Moe Moore to make it a 63-62 game at the 1:25 mark which would hold until two seconds remained as Williams was called for a foul. Holy Family's Casey Schweitzer made both free throws and the Eagles missed at the buzzer.
The Eagles only held a brief 2-0 lead in the first half as Andres led the way with six points for the Eagles at the half. Holy Family led by as much as nine at 26-17, but jumpers from Williams and Andres and a three from Katelyn Canlas made it a 28-24 game before the Tigers made one more basket before the half.
Andres finished with ten points for the Eagles and hit all six of her free-throws. Fernandes finished with nine points, including two threes.
Moore led Holy Family (7-5, 5-0 CACC) with 21 points. Radley scored 13.
The Eagles head back home for a 5:30 p.m. game against Nyack on January 8 in a CACC game.
