Women’s Basketball’s Defense Stymies Dominican In Battle For First Place

Waterbury, Conn. – Sophomore Sha'Raya Haines and junior Taylor Williams each had double-doubles as the Post University women's basketball team held Dominican to 26.1% shooting in a 53-45 win in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) win on Tuesday evening.

The win gave the Eagles sole-possession of first place in the CACC North, as they are 12-4 overall and 7-2 in the CACC.

Williams had 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Haines had 17 points and 12 rebounds.

After a slow shooting start for both teams, the Eagles were able to score the first eight points of the game as Haines and Williams split the points. Dominican wouldn't make their first basket until 2:59 remained in the first quarter, and it would be its only basket in the quarter as the Eagles led 14-2 at the end of the first ten minutes. Dominican shot 1-for-18 from the field in the first.

The slow shooting continued for both teams in the second quarter, but the Eagles as they took a 24-15 lead into the half. Haines scored five points for the Eagles and finished the half with 13 points.

Post upped its lead back to 11 points on three different occasions in the third. The final time on a three-pointer from junior Hannah Benac to give Post a 33-22 lead with 4:58 remaining. The Eagles held the Chargers scoreless for the final 1:53 of the quarter and led 37-29 going into the fourth.

Post extended its lead to 41-29, its largest of the second half after a jumper from Williams and two free-throws by Benac. The Chargers got their deficit down to seven points at 45-38 after a layup from Taylor Tomlinson, but the Eagles were hit their final eight free-throws of the game, including six from Benac to seal the win.

The Eagles held the Chargers to 4-for-24 shooting from three and out-rebounded Dominican 56-38.

Benac finished with a season high 15 points and seven rebounds and went 8-for-8 from the free-throw line.

Khay-la Latimer had 16 points and nine rebounds for Dominican.

Up next, the Eagles will host Chestnut Hill at 1 p.m. on January 25.
