Eagles Score First 12 Points, Don't Look Back In 64-52 Win Over Nyack

Waterbury, Conn. - Four players scored in double figures, and the Eagles scored the first 12 points of the game in a win over Nyack in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game.

The win puts the Eagles at 10-11 overall and 6-7 in the CACC. The Eagles now sit in third place in the North Division.

Five different players scored during the opening run for the Eagles as junior Mia Crooms (Bronx, N.Y.) was fouled on a made layup to start the game. She sank the free-throw to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. After a made free-throw by junior Taylor Ceballos (Milford, Conn.) the next possession down, freshman Melanie Polanco (Meriden, Conn.) scored two of her own on a layup and followed it up with two free-throws to give the Eagles an 8-0 lead. A basket by junior Jessica Degree (Yonkers, N.Y.) gave Post the 10-0 lead before senior Lauren Chambers (Lebanon, Pa.) closed the run with a layup at the 4:44 mark.

The Warriors didn't get on the board until the 4:30 mark as the Eagles finished the first quarter leading 19-9.

A lackluster second quarter saw the Eagles score just six points as the Warriors cut their deficit to 25-22 heading into the half. Crooms had four points in the quarter including a sequence where the Eagles grabbed four straight offensive rebounds before Crooms put the ball in the basket to give Post a 25-18 lead at the time with 4:11 remaining.

The shooting and scoring picked up for the Eagles in the third as they went 4-for-11 from three as freshman Sha'Raya Raines (Springfield, Ma.), senior Gabriela Middleton (Coral Springs, Fla.), Polanco and sophomore Hannah Benac (Boerne, Texas) each hit a three. Nyack tied the game at 2:48 - the only time they would - at 35-35 at the 2:48 mark after two free-throws from Kyla Given. However, the Eagles closed out with a 10-4 run, as Haines and Middleton hit their threes during the stretch.

The Warriors cut the Post's lead to 45-43 at the 8:38 mark in the fourth on a layup from Torie Eggers, but on the next possession, Ceballos made a layup and got fouled. She made the free-throw and followed up with a layup on the next possession to give the Eagles some breathing room at 50-43 with 6:39 left. From there, the Eagles closed out the game on a 14-9 run.

Haines and Crooms each finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. Middleton had ten points and seven rebounds. Ceballos finished with ten points and Degree had eight points and 11 rebounds.

Given led Nyack (3-18, 1-11 CACC) with 18 points.

The Eagles had 21 offensive rebounds, leading to 18 points.

Up next, the Eagles take on Goldey-Beacom on the road at 4 p.m. on February 9 in a CACC tilt.
