Assistant baseball coach Matt Packer will be trading in his Post Eagles orange for that of the Baltimore Orioles as he was named as a development coach with Delmarva Shorebirds, the Single-A affiliate of the team.
Packer has been with Post for two and a half years, primarily working with new technology and data to help develop and evaluate a player's performance.
Asked how he came about the position with the Orioles, Packer said "It was a quick process. I applied on a Saturday, called on Monday, flew me down Wednesday and offered me the job on Friday."
Packer also had a practical portion of the hiring process where he hit with one of the minor leaguers. He also added it was the first time he looked into working with a professional team.
It is the second assistant coach from Post to be hired by an MLB organization recently, as Cory Popham was hired by the Toronto Blue Jays organization this time last year.
"One of the main reasons I was afforded this position with the Orioles, was that coach Ricker believed in the technology and data I was able to provide to help our players at Post. Because I was able to leverage the data and explain it to the players, that's how I was able to get the position," Packer said.
One of the pieces of technology Packer and the Eagles were able to purchase through fundraising was Blast Motion a bat sensory that helps coaches analyze a player's swing. He also used Rapsodo, which helped Packer analyze ball flight and exit velocity.
With the Shorebirds, Packer said he will be working mainly with hitters to start out mainly with hitters, but at some point may be involved in all aspects of the game.
"It's a bittersweet day," head baseball coach Ray Ricker said. "We are excited for Matt for advancing his career. We are thankful for Matt to have given his contributions, which are invaluable to the Post University baseball program."
