Five Eagles Score In Double Figures As Women’s Basketball Takes Down Staten Island

Staten Island, N.Y. – Freshman Kiera Fernandes scored 17 points, including four three-pointers, leading the Post University women's basketball team to an 84-61 win over Staten Island on Saturday afternoon.

Fernandes was one of five players to score in double figures as the Eagles used a balance scoring attack to win their third straight game.

The Eagles fell behind briefly, 4-0 before a three-pointer from sophomore Sha'Raya Haines kickstarted a 13-0 run to give the Eagles a 13-4 lead, one in which they would never relinquish. Fernandes also hit the first of her four threes as did sophomore Katelyn Andres during that run. Post took a 22-10 lead after the first ten minutes. Andres hit two threes in the quarter.

The Eagles extended their lead to 43-26 when behind six points apiece by Haines and Fernandes, with Fernandes hitting two more threes in the quarter. The Eagles were also dominant on the boards, grabbing eight offensive rebounds in the quarter, including two from freshman Jimmirah Johnson, junior Taylor Williams and freshman Tai Pagan.

The Eagles extended their lead to 62-42 after the third and would never lead by less than 15 points the entire second half, extending its lead to as much as 28 points in the fourth quarter at 74-46 after a jumper from Andres.

Haines finished with 16 points, five rebounds and six assists. Williams had 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Pagan had 11 points, eight rebounds – three offensive – and a career-high six blocks. Abdres had 12 points on 5-for-7 shooting.

The Eagles will play at Queens on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. before going on a small Thanksgiving break.
