Back-To-Back: Men’s Soccer Wins Second Straight CACC Title In 1-0 Win Over Georgian Court

Waterbury, Conn. – For the second consecutive year, the Post University Eagles can claim themselves as champions, taking home their second consecutive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) title in a 1-0 win over fifth seeded Georgian Court on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Eagles earned an automatic bid to the Division II NCAA Tournament.

In a tight defensive battle, the Eagles were able to put home a goal in the fifth minute.

Junior Sergio Diaz, the 2018 CACC Player of the Year and the 2019 All First-Team CACC member struck a 40-yard free kick that reached the foot of Francesco Perienelli who put the ball past goalkeeper Jamie Hickey to give the Eagles the 1-0 lead.

The lead held throughout the remaining 85 minutes as the defensive line of grad student and All-CACC member Andrea Baleotto and the goalkeeping of All-CACC second teamer David Mollenthiel denied any and all opportunities of the Lions.

Mollenthiel finished with four saves on the day.

It's the second straight CACC for the Eagles, who defeated Wilmington, 2-0 in the 2018 title game.

Diaz was named the Most Valuable Player of the CACC Tournament.

Head coach Ted Haley was thrilled with the win and the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

"We have improved every week from our August start and the guys are now bonded and are ready to battle," Haley said. "We need to continue to defend with everything in our being but also attack and be decisive in our movements and quality. We have goals in us."

Six members of the Eagles were named to the All-CACC Tournament team. Freshman Felix Hjertqvist, Baleotto, Diaz, Mollenthial, Perienelli and sophomore Phillimon Bedard-Khalid were all named. Bedard-Khalid scored both goals in the 2-1 semifinal win over Holy Family on Friday.

The Eagles, an automatic qualifier for the NCAA tournament, will find out where they will play on Monday.
