Williams Nearly Has Double-Double As Women’s Basketball Loses Opener To Franklin Pierce

Rindge, N.H. – Junior Taylor Williams had 17 points and nine rebounds as the Post University women's basketball team lost its season opener to Franklin Pierce, 60-51 on Wednesday evening.

The Eagles opened up with an 11-2 lead as sophomore Sha'Raya Haines and Williams combined to score all the points in the opening run. The Ravens rallied to close the gap to as little as three after a three-pointer from Sophia Holmes to make it a 14-11 game. Sophomore Katelyn Andres hit two free throws with 1:18 remaining to give the Eagles the 16-11 lead after the first quarter.

Franklin Pierce would close the gap to one at 22-21 in the second quarter before the Eagles closed out with a 10-0 run, giving them their biggest lead of the game as four different Eagles scored buckets to give Post the 32-21 lead at the half. Williams scored four points, and Haines, junior Hannah Benac and sophomore Jaeonna Sutton each scored two points.

The Ravens opened up with a 13-2 run to tie the game, at 34-34 with Holmes scoring the final five points. Post regained the lead briefly on a jumper from Andres before the Ravens took their first lead at 38-36 on a layup from Holmes. Franklin Pierce took a 40-38 lead at 1:11, but Benac and Williams hit back-to-back threes at the end of the quarter to give the Eagles the 44-40 lead heading into the final quarter.

Post extended its lead to seven at 47-40 as Kiera Fernandes hit a three-pointer to open the final quarter. The Ravens rallied to take a 50-49 on two free-throws from Holmes before Andres answered with a jumper at 3:08 to give the Eagles the one-point lead. But it would be the last points the Eagles scored as Franklin Pierce scored the final ten points of the game.

Benac finished with 11 points, going 3-for-8 from three. Haines finished with nine points and five rebounds. Andres and Kiera Fernandes each had six points apiece off the bench.

Holmes finished with 23 points for the Ravens.

Up next, the Eagles host Cheyney University of Pennsylvania at 1 p.m. on November 16.
