Middleton Leads Four Players In Double Figures as Eagles Top Mercy, 85-70

Waterbury, Conn. - The Post University women's basketball team got back in the win column, snapping a three game losing streak as it defeated Mercy 85-70 in a non-conference game on Wednesday night.

Senior Gabriela Middleton (Coral Springs, Fla.) led the way for the Eagles with 22 points, including going 8-for-9 from the free-throw line. Classmate Lauren Chambers (Lebanon, Pa.) chipped in with 18 points off the bench on 7-for-12 shooting.

The Eagles improved to 7-8 overall, while Mercy fell to 3-12.

After falling behind 22-15 after the first quarter, the Eagles used a big second quarter to take control of the game. freshmen Sha'Raya Haines (Springfield, Mass.) and Melanie Polanco  (Meriden, Conn.) each scored six points in the quarter and  used a 21-7 run over the last 6:07  of the first half to take a 38-32 lead at the break. Polanco hit two threes during the stretch, including one with 11 seconds left.

In the third, the Eagles increased their lead to 14 on a layup from Middleton before taking a 60-51 lead going into the fourth quarter. Chambers hit two threes in the quarter and junior Jessica Degree (Yonkers, N.Y.) scored four of her eight points in the frame.

Middleton's 14 points in the fourth put the game away for the Eagles, as she scored eight of the final ten points and went 7-for-7 from the free throw line.

Polanco finished with 13 points with the game as did Haines who also grabbed eight rebounds. Post hit ten of its 23 three-point attempts (43.5%).

The Eagles grabbed 12 offensive rebounds, led by junior Mia Crooms (Bronx, N.Y.), who had four, converting them into 16 second chance points. 

Mercy's Amber Brown finished with 24 points to lead all scorers.

Up next, the Eagles take on USciences to begin a three-game home stretch on Jan. 19 at 1 p.m.
