LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The fifth-seeded Post University softball team's season came to close on Friday afternoon with a 7-2 loss to No. 2 Wilmington in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament. The Eagles finish the year at 19-26 overall.
Wilmington used a single and a triple to take a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added another run on a lead-off home to begin the third.
Senior
Emily Schaffer (Hazlet, N.J.) began the fourth with her second hit of the day. Two batters later senior
Sara Selimovski (Watertown, Conn.) doubled to left field as the Eagles put runners at second and third with one out. Freshman
Avery Kelly (New Milford, Conn.) walked to load the bases, but everyone was stranded after pop up to shallow right ended the inning.
The Wildcats put the game away in the bottom of the fourth as pitcher Makayla McCarthy smacked a grand slam to centerfield to extend their advantage to 7-0.
Schaffer reached on a dropped fly ball to start the sixth. Freshman
Demi Rivera (Hazlet, N.J.) followed with a deep home run to left field, her second of the tournament, to cut the deficit to 7-2. Two more errors in the inning by Wilmington helped the Eagles load the bases, but they were unable to pull any closer.
With a 3-for-4 day, Schaffer finished the season with a batting average of .417, the fourth-highest in Post history and the best in a single-single in the Eagles' NCAA Division II era.
